Anybody got any tips where to go to find urchins near SF? Does Half Moon Bay or anywhere near there have decent urchins? Ideally would find some accessible straight from the yak on rocks and stuff, but not necessarily opposed to an easy free dive for them.

Thanks a lot,
Aaron

Run up to the Sonoma coast and jump in and you'll find plenty.

Swim or paddle straight out of timber cove in Sonoma. Hit the bull kelp and drop straight down on to them. Plenty of abs there too.

Anyone else have any suggestions that might be a little closer to SF proper? e.g. anywhere in SF proper or San Mateo County?

Thanks a lot!

I suggest you need more than 7 posts before asking for spots ...

FWIW,  I've always had to dive for them.

Pretty much any rocky area with kelp will have them.

The ones north of SF seem to be bigger/better quality than the ones I've found in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.

Good luck!

Ha, fair point. :)

Like I said in my intro post, I'm just trying to break into kayak fishing, which is a little tough to do if you don't have much clue where to go. Totally understand not wanting to give away all the secrets, though.

Thanks a lot, BigJim! Great tips. Sounds like heading north is the way to go, even if I could find them closer to home. Also sounds like I'll want to invest in a wetsuit, some flippers, and a mask. :)

How else were you planning on getting them if you didn't dive for them?

I guess you could rock pick for them on a minus tide but you would still need a wetsuit and mask. Don't know never rock picked????

Yea, that was my thinking. Figured maybe at a dead low tide there might be some accessible on rocks/reefs. I'm just guessing here, though. Haven't done it myself yet.
