So I've been a volunteer at Sonoma county wildlife rescue for a couple of years now and they know know I like to fish. I got a really cool request from them to catch some trout for a bald eagle they just got in. They will have him for about a month and he eats one or two fish a day. I wanted to reach out to my ncka fam for some help so we can get some trout in their freezer as soon as possible. If anyone regularly fishes for trout or is planning on going in the next week please let me know! I can pick up fish from anyone in Sonoma or Marin county! I'll probably fish Bon Tempe (from shore of course) after work next week if anyone wants to join! Oh yeah and the eagle likes his fish whole- guts and all! Thanks!

I don't have any experience fishing that area but it sounds like a great reason to go catch some trout!  Hope to read your report.

We have a "five-pacK" baggie of trout that have been vacuum-packed in the freeze for a couple of years, but they have been gutted. We live in Sacramento, but will be at the Petaluma KOA Fri night, Sat night and Sun night this weekend. (We are performing at the "Much Ado About Sebastopol" Renaissance Faire this weekend.) If you can use them, I would be glad to throw them into the freezer in the trailer and bring them along. I will PM you my cell phone number and we can connect tonight, tomorrow, or Friday. We will be in Sebastopol setting up pavilions, etc Friday afternoon, but will be back at the trailer in the evening.

I caught trout in Pheonix Lake around San Anselmo when I was a wee lad. Don't know if there's fish in there now but it would be fun to try. It's a beautiful little spot and one can easily walk the entire lake in one day. In other words you can fish the whole lake from various points along  the shore in one day.

Really the trout are hurting in Marin due to the drought. Also fishing is seldom legal in Marin waters. Check that it's legal still at Pheonix if you decide to go.

Lake Lauganitas is another possibility that comes to mind. Lake Chabot in the East Bay has been productive in the past with nice "trophy sized" planter trout, but I hear the recent heat wave has triggered a terrible algae bloom. Several other East Bay lakes have been closed due to similar blooms. Lake Chabot is also the only place I know in the Urban Bay Area where there is a possibility of seeing a wild Bald Eagle.

All in all it's a terrible time right now to try for trout in the immediate Bay Area. Now if one were to drive to the Tahoe area, all that changes. I had a blast playing with trout at Ice House Resovoire a couple weekends ago.

Hope you can feed that Eagle.

Annie there is a trout farm out on Bodega Hiway. I wouldnt pay to fish there but they might even donate! Hagemanns

Other than that Berryessa. Lake Sonoma. Its really the wrong time of year for trout plants in the Tam watershed. Hagemanns is closed I think for the season but I would call and explain the situation. Good Luck. let me know how it goes!

Oh, yeah. Don't forget there is a trout farm/fishing place on Bodega Hwy before you get to Bodega. http://hagemannranch.com/ Maybe they can give you some culls/fails/other unusable fish for the cause.

Picky Eagle won't he eat Squawfish? That's what they are stealing from the Ospreys along the River.

Oh good idea Craig! I'll give them a call!

Definitely sucks when the drought is put into perspective... And it sucks that the Eagles timing couldn't be better haha but I'm still gunna try and get those trouties!!

If anyone from the sierras or other "trouty" areas are coming to the Sonoma or Mendocino coasts in the next few weekends and can bring me trout let me know..

There was a fish hatchery in Lake Sonoma. I think it's still there.

Maybe they can donate some.

Good luck.

If it doesn't have to be trout (I would think they eat any fish that are the right size) then I could try to get some smelt like David suggested or squawfish.

I took my kids to the trout farm up by calistoga a couple months back.  Well I let them catch trout with no limits so 350.00 later they finally got sick of fishing.   Point being I have a those trout in the freezer you can have.  They are gutted and gilled

So a friend of mine had 5 whole frozen trout that I was able to bring in to the rescue this morning! They said different fish will work too so that makes it a lot easier! I think the guts have nutrients that the eagle needs so they asked for whole fish only. Thanks for the offer siryakalot!
