Being a conversationalist I will not be keeping many fish.

So, instead of eating the fish you catch, you just talk to them?

Hey Zach,

Hope you get on the water soon! Kayak fishing can be enjoyed on the cheap. You can catch plenty of rockfish without a fishfinder or any fancy tackle.

Go to http://www.dfg.ca.gov/m/MPA/Map on your phone-- this will show you all the marine protected areas that are closed to fishing.

Good luck and enjoy the ocean.  :smt006

Thank you for the website!  Thanks for giving me hope on doing it on the cheap. I hope to get out there very soon.

Do I need an 18 inch net if I am going after rock fish?  I heard having a net is required when targeting salmon and halibut.

I know the struggle. Bring a net, you'll be glad you have one when you hook into lingzilla. Might want to get one a tad bigger than 18" or a nice sharp gaff

I don't mean to hijack this thread but...lol

I am new as well.  Can anyone tell me a bit more about Sand Dabs?  From what I gather they are a flat fish like, what I grew up catching flounder, and halibut.  It seemed to me that they were really small.  Can anyone tell me what size these fish are?  Anything under about a 14" flat fish didn't really offer much for meat on flounder.  My favorite btw.  I read they are delicious...so how big are they?  How are they targeted?  Sabiki rig?  Mostly over sand?  Anyone on this board target them on the way to or from bigger prey?

Thanks guys...feel free to pm as I really don't like hijacking this thread.  Just brought up a question I have been wondering about quite a bit.  Thanks again!

No worries about the thread jack  :smt002. I am interested as well. I have never caught one either but have seen them in restraints and online. All fishing information regarding species in Monterrey area and sws are more than welcome

The size of your hand typically. You cut the guts and the head off in one diagonal cut, scale them and fry them whole. They are delicious. Sabiki rig with small pieces of squid. They are over sand, typically in deep water (100+ fow). They make great ling and halibut bait as well. When you find a good school of them they'll typically stick to each of your sabiki hooks.

Wow that is amazing. That was all at once?  How much weight do you need on a sabiki rig to hold steady at 100+ fow.  I hope to get a stringer like that one day. Is this the same sabiki rig as the cheap ones at Walmart or is the line stronger?

That was in Moss Landing on Albycor's boat and we found them THICK! Filled up two large coolers of them and it took me about 2 hours to clean them all. In Monterey head to the red can and try to find sand and you'll usually get into them. They tend to be a smaller grade but you can usually pic up at least enough for dinner if you target them. When you feel them start to bite wait for about ten seconds and let the sabiki load up and you'll usually bring in at least three every drop. If you're gonna target them with a sabiki make sure to do it first before switching over to rockfish since you have to use two or less hooks for rockfish. If DFG finds you with rf on the yak with a sabiki rig in the water you might go home with a fine. If the wind is down usually it takes about 3-6 oz to stay on the bottom at that depth. They're fun to target in the winter time when there's nothing else going on...or you could just stay at home and talk shit about the Raiders on NCKA :smt044

Thanks for the advice on the sandabs. I hope to catch a few on my trip.

I used to live in Portland and the closest team was Seattle. I have been a fan when they were the worst in the league. They used to be the butt of quite a few jokes, therefore I will stay away from the poor raider fans as I know how much it sucks to be a losing team haha.

Zach, you got my number, just send me a text. I fish SWS a decent amount but can't go fishing that weekend, since I've got the kids. It's a bit of a pain to carry your kayak back up the stairs at SWS, especially if you got a BG2. Best to find someone to go with you.

Also I'd recommend a better quality sabiki, something with 25lb test or better.  We were in Monterey last weekend, and my 6 hook sabiki got attacked by 6 mackerel..well the Macks started swimming different directions and 4 of them broke off, screwing up the sabiki.

is it legal just to make a leader with 3 or 4 or 5 hooks hooks for macks?

Thanks for the beta!  That photo of a sabiki rig full of them is pretty sweet.  The tips about targeting them first before rockfish is gold!
