I have been using shrimp flies for bottom rock fish and I hear many reporting success with metal jigs.
Please share your expertise... thank you.

What are you trying to catch? I like to use something big on the bottom for the big boys and then a single smaller item above. I like to think it makes it look like a big bait chasing a smaller bait. I tend to get a decent number of ling hitchhikers munching on smaller RF that took the top bait.

So basically a shrimp fly above and a large jig below.

Hehehe

Just kidding.  Metals, jigs, swimbait and live bait rigs will get you bigger fish.  Use the sabiki to catch bait.

Michael:

When get you go fishing, look at what the guys catching what you want to catch are using and ask questions. Most people are happy to talk fishing, but the occasional sourpuss might tell you to pound sand, thank him and go on about your day.

You will learn a lot. You have an excellent opportunity to do it his at TRW in a couple weeks.

I buy whatever  is on sale or in the clearance bins.ive bought 20$ jigs and had em snag on the third retrieve.so anything from 3-12 oz in shiny metal chrome, polish, or chartreuse, glow, anything florescent in color will usually catch fish

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

A 6" chunk of rebar with a hook will catch fish!

Hey man, I had the same questions when I started out this summer. My suggestion:

Use a sabiki to catch live bait or buy frozen whole squid and use a halibut stinger rig.  I typically start with squid until I find live bait.
You can buy a "halibut stinger rig" from any tackle shop or west marine, etc. I use a 4oz weight for use in 30-120 ft of water. Here's a URL for a pic: http://www.allcoast.com/photos/data/500/113622HALIBUTRIG7236.jpg

You can drift or troll with this rig. Using full squid I've caught large rockfish. Once ive got a mackerel or anchovie hooked on the rig I catch lingcod or sharks.  Still waiting for the halibut, but they will bite on this rig, just a matter of time.

Good luck!

I've been using a shrimp fly teaser above either a big swim bait or jig or bait (squid or something small that I caught), with good success this year.  The different sizes seem to have all the bases covered. The smaller fish tend to leave the bigger bottom bait alone.

Even without the hook you might get the occasional lingcod...

Nowdays I usually bring one plano tray that contains a bit of everything. Swimbais, metal jigs, some bait stuff.
I like metal jigs sometimes, especially if there are a lot of rockfish around. I put big barbless siwash hooks on them to replace the stock trebles, and it makes the "hit every drop" type of bite easier.
lately I've had luck on P-line jigs in blue or orange patterns. The verms seem to prefer the orange color.
