After 25 years of Grocery I've been offered a Correctional Officer position at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione. My Academy starts October 19. I'm freaking out a little. I'm wondering how this is going to affect my fishing.

Congratulations on the new career. You've got the moklumne river, the kokanee and smallmouth fishery in pardee, the American river and its associated reservoirs... Some good stuff pretty local. Good luck adjusting to and prospering in the new life. Feel free to PM me if u want info on any of those fisheries

Congrats!  Shouldn't hurt your fishing at all... in fact, will probably open it up. If ya work nights, you can go fishing immediately after work very day of the week.  :smt003. And you'll probably have random week days off so the fishing spots won't be crowded.

Congrats.  Big change.  After probation you can work as much or as little as you want.  Just take fishing days off when needed as it can be a stressful job.

Thinking about turning it down. Drove out there from Citrus Heights today. 1 hour with no traffic. Benefits $320 a month, pension $420 a month. With gas I'd be making a lot less than I am now for a few years. It's really hard to leave a good job for a better job.

But think of all the dough you could make smuggling in contraband.

Kidding of course.

Think about where you want to be in a few years, rather than the cut you may take for a relatively short time.  My two cents.

The state offers great opportunity for promotions, benifits, pay, and retirement. In 7 years you will have more time off and more pay than you probably make now. Vacation is easy to take as long as you don't abuse your sick leave. It amazingly easy to get time off through swaps and what not. Time you get to spend away from work in the line of work your going to is 2nd to none. That being said your job is going to change you. It will make you desensitized to certain things. Make you less of a "people person" because most people don't understand what you do. If you choose that profession take your time off enjoy family and anything that makes you happy.
Congrats on the job
