Hey guys, I am planning a trip out to the delta on 9/5 or 9/6 to fish for sturgeon on my paddle kayak.    I have fished the delta before but never on a kayak.  I also have never tried for sturgeon but always wanted to catch one.

I heard that a good safe spot would be to launch from Antioch and then head over to Broad Slough.  If there are any other places that are safer, easier to fish and have big sturgeon, please let me know.

A couple questions:  Is an anchor needed to properly fish for sturgeon or to stay safe?

I wanna fish with bait to keep things simple.  Would frozen anchovies be a good bet?

Any and all info on kayaking on the delta as well as fishing for sturgeon is much appreciated!

Thinking of just your safety, and judging by the questions you asked, my advice is to not go sturgeon fishing from your yak until you can go with someone else that is experienced.  Have some fun doing other things and then in the late fall sturgeon hookups will start to show up on the board.
+1

Not to kill your enthusiasm, but jumping right onto the delta and being unfamiliar with an anchor system sounds like a bad combo. Especially for sturgeon which is a long shot most days, and even more of a long shot this time of year. Hold off until things get going later his year and tag along with someone who's more experienced.

There should be some good striper action out that way now though. Tossing artificials to schools of stripers chasing bait balls can be a lot of fun. Just a suggestion. Good luck whatever you end up chasing !

I have a small  buoy and a carribeaner in my rear cargo area hooked onto a rope thats tied through my scupper holes. I can reach back and unhook it in 4 seconds if need be incase debree hits my anchor line or fish on. In my opinion salmon roe is the best bait.but the individual eggs have to be big like you get from the clapped out river salmon. The small roe is no good. Ive always outfished my buddies with it fwiw. I like cache slough. Go get em!

if you decide to target sturg. dont be dissapointed if you get skunked many Xs before you get one. Sturgeon=many hrs per hook up. but when the conditions are right you can catch many in a few hours. keep at it and you will get on em. I caught them from PBs and shore but I have not caught any sturgeon from a kayak but I have only tried twice, so this winter I will be going after them. They are becoming my devil fish!! try SPB mouth of petaluma river,China camp area and the mouth of Sonoma Creek also Napa River can be very good for sturg. The Pumphouse in SPB is a favorite spot too.

What is SPB and where is the mouth of petaluma river if you don't mind my asking.  I also want to chase after this monster too, but from the shore only.  I am still debating whether I should get a Kayak or not for sport fishing.  My draw back was the sharks stories which I heard from our members here.

Thank you,
Ivenn

If there is sufficient interest I am willing to do a free kayak sturgeon clinic for the Sacramento area. It would be geared more toward sac river/delta sturgeon fishing than bay fishing.

I would cover:
Anchor systems, safety & etiquette
CDFW regs
Bait presentation etc.
How to safely fight and land big fish from a kayak

If you look at SPB on google maps and imagine it to be the face of a clock, the Petaluma river is at 10 oclock.  It looks like you and I share the same concerns.  There are dangers associated with all the fish that I want to catch.  I feel that risk can be mitigated with enough knowledge, time and money but there are no guarantees.

+1 on the big fish clinic. I haven't been on the delta by kayak yet because I don't have any experienced anglers to go with yet. I'd jump at that chance.

I'd be interested in that clinic if you didn't already have it. I wouldn't even mind if you charged a fee to hold it :)
