I was fishing today out of Russian Gulch with my son, Son of a fish, and my fishing buddy Yazheng.  Yazheng had the hot stick, so the two Raydon's were silently throwing darts at her with our eyes.  I was using a rock fish combo of shrimp fly on top with a four ounce swim bait on bottom.  I dropped to the bottom and reeled up several feet and the line starts buzzing. I was confused because everything looked and sounded like I had  a big fish on, but no line was coming off the reel.  This continued for 5 seconds or so and then my line started coming up towards the surface.  I then knew I had a salmon or thresher shark  on.   So I followed my line out and then I saw the shark bust through surface and then my line went slack.  I was numb after   I knew what I saw.  I saw about 7 feet of it curl back into the water and it looked as wide as a wine barrel.  I sat silently and just waited to see what would happen. Yazheng saw it also as I  told her I had a salmon and she was following my line.  It was amazing.

It was Russian Gulch in Mendocino about 1/2 mile north of the mouth in 80 fow.  I never hooked the shark.  After it broke the surface my line went limp and I was able to reel my line in with the hooks still intact.  I never hooked it.   I had a stringer full of fish dangling in the water most of the morning, and now that I recall it, I never saw a seal.
