Thank you so much everyone for all the great info and advice! We have so much to go off of now and feel like we have some direction! As we start buying gear I'm sure questions will come up so I'll be sure to ask them here. Hopefully we can go diving with some of you guys in the future! We want to learn all we can. Thanks again for all the help everyone!!

If you guys make it down towards Monterey let me know and I'll do my best to get free to show you around. Some fun diving down here for sure.

Not sure if I can add much, BigJim has not only shot a lot of fish, but you can see his stuff in his awesome gopro videos. He mentioned starting with a little pneumatic. I actually have gone the opposite having a wood gun and a few pole spears for years then converting to pneumatics about two years ago. Now, my "Go To" guns are my  little Mares 70 cm pneumatic and my even smaller Cressi- Sub pneumatic. If you look at the pic I attached all those fish were shot about 10 days just using those little pnematics including a 22 lb ling.
You don't have to spend a ton on gear, but I HIGHLY recommend getting a mask you love (keep trying till you have one that's perfect). Also you can kayak in a two piece, but if you have a farmer john bottom, you can leave the top off and you probably won't overheat. Try an off the rack suit, but if you are an oddball body type, I also highly recommend the splurge on a custom suit. I bought my daughter (lot less suits for women on the racks) a custom suit from Petros at SpearAmerica. It was $360 or $390 including airfreight from Greece and she FREAKIN loves it- I can't get her out of the water.
Bottom line: if you're comfortable and your mask is comfy and doesn't leak you'll have a good time. BTW a lot of guys like expensive fins, personally for all this N CA hole diving I think a pair of split fins or off the shelf plastic Picasso black team fins are plenty good.
Good luck, hope to see you both out there!!!

I have that dive knife, and I keep it as a backup, but don't ever really use it. The way it's shaped, it takes a lot of pressure to get the first half inch into a fish's head, then it cuts straight through the fish... into your hand.
