This may be a stupid question .. What time is the launch? :smt013

Is it like the MBK tourney where everybody launched at a certain time ?
When I emailed them they said from 6AM (it might still be pretty dark) and we can launch anywhere from the harbor

Still not sure which Ocean Kayak will be 1st prize.  could be a Predator 13 or could be a prowler TRIDENT 15 or 13.....Any way you look at it a nice bonus for biggest fish.  here's info from KC with the simpole rules.  Mainly.  You have to launch from Santa Cruz haarbor.  You gotta have a waiver signed before you launch (someone will be in the shop at 6:30am, maybe even 6. You gotta get back to weigh-in by 1pm.  Period.  Weigh in will be at the hand launch ramp next to "F" Dock, Northwest siode of harbor.  I'll be weighmaster and will be at that location around 11:30.

Here's the official info.  If you haven't already, get your entries in, and get a waiver form emailed to you and sign it, and email it back.

Kayak Fishing Derby

We're getting back to our roots and looking for big fish, lotsa fun, and the opportunity to help out a worthy cause - the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.

The derby kicks off Sunday, October 18th out of the Santa Cruz Harbor. Entries are $35 per person, and all profits benefit the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.

Largest Game Fish Takes It!

We'll have weigh-ins and BBQ at 1PM back at our shop at 413 Lake Ave, right along the harbor.  We'll also have several fishing kayaks for rent, as well, be sure and call the shop to reserve yours if interested.

The entry fee for the derby is $35 - all profits will go to benefit the Monterey Bay Salmon & Trout Project.

Rules are posted below:
1) All fish must be caught from a person powered kayak, no motors or sails, or other boat assistance.
2) Fish must be legally hooked, fought, and landed (solo) by individual angler.
3) Must have a valid fishing license and adhere to all DFW regulations.
4) Launch and landing from public launch docks of Santa Cruz Harbor only.  Travel to other areas for launching and fishing is not permitted.
5) 1:00 PM is the cut-off weigh-in time.  Anglers must be present and in line for weigh-in by 1PM to qualify.
6) Heaviest weighed sport-fish wins.
7) Leopard and thresher sharks included, but no other sharks or rays qualify.
8) If two fish have exact equal weight, then the longer of the two wins.
9) Final decisions on any controversy will be made by Derbymeister with input from participants.  Derbymeister decisions are final.
10) Waiver forms must be signed and entry fees paid prior to launching on 10/18/15.

The OK Rep is bringing one prize yak.. I recomended he bring a T-15.  Though it might be a predator 13.  Depends on which he can donate.  Whichever one he brings is the one for 1st prize.

Just thought I'd share the latest bait intel from last weekend.  Bait was scattered.  We found both pacific and spanish macks.  And to my surprise, a large majority were mini-macs in the 5-7" range.  Also stumbled on a school of 'chovies, which we haven't seen a lot of this year.  So, size your sabiki's down some and go gettem'.

Thanks Polepole.  and, to make thisngs clear.  If you're signed up and have your waiver in, you don't have to go to the shop.  Just launch from SC harbor and be back before 1pm.  If you dont have a waiver, or haven't paid entry nor signed waiver, go to the shop at 6am.  YUou can sign up sign waiver, and go launch.

Weigh in is at hand launch ramp on Southwest Quadrant of harbor. Near F Dock, where Stagnaro's Velocity ties up.  And near UCSC docks.  I'll be there around 11:30.  If you get in with fish before I arrive, keep them wet for weighin.  (Don't put them on a stringer in the harbor water.  Sea lions, and harbor seals might steal your brand-new kayak from you.

If I catch the sea lion off a stringer, can I bring it to the weight in? I hope you're ready, I hear they can be like 400 pounds.
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

Just signed up. Cant wait!

Been to s.c. once before, i parked at aldos restaurant side (west side of harbor) paid the 10bucks for park and launch.

From my understanding, kayak connection is on the opposite side (east) of the harbor, but weigh-in area will be on the aldo's side (west) by the floating dock?

Correct me if im wrong. Still a newbie.

Which side would be more practical to park and launch at? And assuming i want to rally with the rest of the ncka peeps before/after and also attend the bbq.  Which side is everyone else using? And if i park on east side of harbor, would launch be from boat ramp? What are parking/launch fees?

You got it right, as far as parking goes there are two public launch docks on that side.. I'm unsure where weigh ins are but I'm sure they're on the KC side of the harbor... Anywho see ya there!!!
