Cody caught a halibut a while ago, and that night we made this recipe. I like doing this with halibut once in a while, it is extremely easy, and perty darn good! Never tried it with stripers, so we tried a little off the one he caught that day too. Striper is just too flaky for this recipe. Cabezon are great this way, and I want to try leopard shark and monkeyface eel cooked like this. You swear you are eating lobster!

Cody was hilarious with that halibut. "Dad, if it shrinks, AT ALL, we're screwed!" It was 22.0001 inches. The striper was 31 3/4" I figured between 12 and 15#'s, not sure, didn't weigh it. His first keeper, and bigger than my PB. Pretty fun day even though the salmon didn't cooperate.

Learned the poor mans lobster in Alaska.  Had a lot of Halibut and needed to try different recipes.  Wife loved it.  Glad Cody is getting out there with you and getting new species.

I just tried this with a cab I shot over the weekend.  With a little adjustment here and there to the recipe,  I had people who know seafood tell me they thought it was crab.  They were totally puzzled why the texture wasn't "crablike" though  :smt044

Hey Rich,

Awesome recipe! My buddy does this with cabby too but he makes his own heavy sugar water solution. He only boils the fillets on each side for about 30 seconds. He then throws the fillets on a baking sheet and into the oven on broil to slightly brown with a some butter, salt and pepper.

But make sure you wash the sugar pan out quick cause it can harden fast. It can be a PITA to clean.

I bet! The 7 UP pan washes out easily. You can use any soda too guys, I just use 7 UP. It isn't something that you want to cook a ton of, but a little once in a while is a great treat!
