Beautiful misty morning. Fished for several hours through tide changes. Maybe one bite and that's a maybe. Lotta boats buzzing around but I saw no fish landed. Tomales halibut is a hit and miss venture. There are some there but to be successful more time on the water has to be put in than I have time for.

Plenty of bait on the meter and what looked to be small herring skipping on the surface. Don't know if macks were around or not. I jigged swim baits and hair raisers on long drifts down the channels.

so that's what the skipping was. we saw that earlier in the year but wasn't sure what it was.

Nope not herring. Most likely anchovie, the bay has been loaded with them. they are on the small side between 3"-4" but they are easy to catch and are ok bait. They dont hold up well in a live well so you have to get them on the hook and in the water fairly quickly. but dead fresh chovie is better than frozen IMO. And yes sometimes you need to invest some time to catch halibut but thats why its called fishing!!! :smt002

I haven't been out there for a month, but it sounds like the place is getting beat. Lots of pressure. I'm sure that has thinned em out too. Hopefully I can make another run out there in the near future. Since salmon's been such a bust this year the halis take a beating. Same thing happened the years the salmon season was closed.

Don't give up yet, look what was caught out there the other day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don Mosby caught this 56 pound sea bass behind Hog Island on a live jacksmelt. He also caught three halibut. He was down to the spool on the initial run, thumbed it, and the fish turned around instead of snapping him off.
