I just found out that Aubrey and Maddy attended the same school last year. Different grade but they could have at least known each other. This conversation is going to suck

Made me sick to my stomach reading the previous article. So disgusting and sad. In your gut, you don't want to be reactionary and let things change how you go about your life, but this one is particularly hard to come to grips with. You can't take for granted thay your child will come home after riding their scooter in the yard. As crash alluded to, that nice, ordinary looking kid next door may posses the heart of an absolute monster. Really shakes you to the core. Condolences go out to the family.

I spoke to both of my boys about this today. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to go into more detail so that they know never to let their guards down.

I've had these discussions with them in the past. It's tough to have to expose them to the reality of the world we live in when they are so innocent.

They need to know to always watch out for one another and don't talk to strangers. I'm so glad that they've been taking Kung Fu for the past two plus years. Since they emphasize dealing with abduction attempts as part of the curriculum.

I know horrific things happen to innocent people everyday in this world, but having an 8yo daughter who rides her scooter in our neighborhood this one really hits home.
Extra hugs for my girl today, and my thoughts and prayers are with Maddy's family and friends. May she rest in peace.

Until now I've only told a handful of people about this, but I was abused when I was about her age.  In my opinion the solution is not to keep your kids under lock and key...  but rather tell them it's ok to NOT trust adults or elders.  Back then we had free reign, and were taught to always listen to elders.  Wrong.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. 

unfortunately i knew the kid.....as some of you all know I teach Art/Ceramics at Pajaro Valley high school in Watsonville.  I'm real good friends with the ceramics teacher at SC high where this kid was one of his star ceramics students.  My even closer buddy helps run the ceramics supply store in SC, this past year he was helping  the kid out, giving him good advice, helping him with his ceramics game.  We were even going to try to build the kid a bike with some of our resources.  Not totally following the story closely on sunday, but listening to new headlines as the story progressed, then 15 year old boy.....wtf!   Pretty shocked and turned around to say the least.
