I wanted to make an achor setup similar to what is on the back of a drift boat so I could anchor above a run and feed in bait or plugs.   I made a simple bracket that attached to the factory carry handle and rudder mounts.  It has a small Harken roller at the tip to reduce friction and a chassis tab to guide the line to the roller.  I added a small nylon clam cleat next to the seat to secure the line.  Dropping and retrieving the anchor is super ez, even with one hand.  I'll let you guys know how it works in the field.  Gotta make a bigger anchor first.

Test fit up close...

A little further back...

Very Nice Let's hope the River clears.

Thanks.  I made a 10# anchor too.  I combined a turkey fryer, one of Elsies empty fruit cocktail cans and 4 salmon cannon balls, and an old clevis...

Then I cut the old can away for a 10# serving of fruit cocktail...

looks like it could work as a downrigger deployer for trolling with a long (9') rear pointed rod too.

wish I had those mad fabrication and welding skillz.

The downrigger idea is kinda interesting.  BTW-welding is no big deal.  I took a class at a local JC years ago...no problem.

Nice work Sean.... for the non-welders out there... how do you think the Scotty anchor lock would work?

Erik I am working on one looks like it will work out well little bulky but I didn't want to drill holes so I comes on and off fast.

That looks great...it ought to work as long as its strong enough.  Not sure how much weight its really gonna take.  The anchor I made is heavy and feel like too much.

Mike,

I'm wondering if you would have trouble if a fish took a quick run around your stern.  Would your line run up between the mount and kayak and possibly get wedged in and hard to extricate?

I guess it could happen although most steelies will stay down stream. Occasionally they will run up stream but with an 8.5' rod and most fish will try and get as far from the pull as they can it shouldn't be much of a problem. If so I only have about 6' of rope out and can get it up pretty quick. I have caught a lot of steelies from my 8' drift boat which has a similar set up and never had a problem. Some fish are totally unpredictable and fast so it could happen, but so what I lose a fish it's not a big deal you can't win them all.

I've never played a steelhead from a kayak, only from the shore, so I was just wondering.  I've had some of these stripers make a run around me as I was bringing them along side the kayak to net, and they have run around my rudder bracket and almost got the line caught.  Which reminds me--got to take that rudder off.
