Hi,

rapala pliers I bought recently are rusty crap, are there any that everybody likes?

Also, my old net is not big enough (I literally had to help today's ling to get in) - any recommendation?

TIA!

I got a pair of Shimano pliers from Hi's in Daily City that replaced my Repala  pair that Neptune took before it could rust, really like them.
Spray with Corrosion X often to prevent it from getting frozen shut!

P-line make some good aluminum pliers with replaceable cutter and teeth.

EGO makes a great extendable floating net. Best thing about the net, simply just unscrew/ change out the heads for different species. Being able to break it down is convenient for travel purposes.

I had one of those Promar folding nets and it didn't last a season. I took good care of it by rinsing it and spraying it with WD-40 after every out but in about 9 months it just snapped one day while I was trying to open it. I now use your standard boat net, albeit slightly shorter. It works fine and I don't have to fiddle with it on the water.

As for pliers they make some that are aluminum that I'm using for most things. I also have a Leatherman wave that's pretty solid. Hard to go wrong with a multi tool, just make sure it's tethered.

I've using Rapala Long nose pliers now for 4 years.  I rinse them after a saltwater trip and put a drop of Corrosion X.  They been holding up fine.

I'm using the Pline Adaro pliers with a braid cutter.

They have held up really well only being rinsed and with a dab of corrsion x or wd40 from time to time.
The braid cutters don't cleanly clip braid anymore, but the blades are replaceable (I've just been forgetting to get new ones).

Plier's : I use a Gerber multi tool that gets sprayed down with WD-40 after every use. It is on a lanyard so I don't loose it.

Net a Frabill generic one.  does the job. If I roll, I am not out much.

you can spend alot, trying to buy the things that claim wont rust, but if you are getting salty enough, you will have to spray anti corrosion stuff on things all the time.

Dis type.

I'll second this ^. I have the same ones and they're going strong. I always rinse after each trip then give a spritz of WD-40 and a wipe.

As for the net... I'm happy with my bigass Frabill "Pro-Formance" net for salmon and my smaller Cummings net for anything else that I want to keep but don't want to stick with a gaff.

The pline adarro pliers mentioned by wingshooter are badass.  I've used all kinds and these are by far the best imho. Mostly fish saltwater and I rinse em and coat em with wd40 and stick em back in the pfd.  They're a year old and still look and cut like new.

Thanks, all. I just came back from trip and some wd40 seem to have fixed (at least to some extent) my rapalas. And, of course, on the way back I stopped by OPS and bought some backups.

As far as net goes - do you usually gaff or net? For me net seems to be safer choice (though it's probably a catch22 and I need to practice with gaff) and for smaller lings, when I'm not sure on the size it's probably the only one? (I just found that ling I thought was 28-29" when I measured it in kayak was, indeed, 32")

I gaff lings that I know are big enough (in the lower jaw). Also gaff halibut that are definite keepers (in the gut). Rockfish I'll usually just heave into the yak unless they're big enough to need netting. Salmon get netted with my bigass Frabill.
