I'm thinking of driving down to Baja for a couple of weeks at the end of January. Any recommendations for fishing down there at that time of year?

No, but if you surf, for sure check out the seven sisters area.  it is just plain cool.

there is fishing there too, but just the 'usual' baja kind:

My brother caught a 10lb halibut from shore at 'the wall' , I caught a 3lb croaker (the good eating kind) from shore.

there is a 'secret spot' known as tres alejandros, it's an easy longboard spot, but super fun camping.

I would love to go down there in the winter with a kayak and a couple boards!

I would recommend checking out the book "The Baja Catch" by Neill Kelly and Gene Kira

[ur]http://www.mexfish.com/apgs/tbc3/tbc3.htm[/url]

It's a great book with lots of logistic details as well as maps and fishing calendars (i.e. what to fish for when).

Where to fish really depends on how much time you have to spend.  I spent nearly a month (May) down there last year with some friends kayak fishing and camping on the beaches (usually free).  Evidnetly, may wasn't the best time of year to go fishing there, but we had a blast and caught lots of fish.

I ordered that book last week. I'm eagerly awaiting it !!

I'm thinking of going almost down to Cabo. I'll be on the Pacific and the Gulf too.  I hear the wind can get crazy on the Sea of Cortez.  Probably Magdalena Bay to see whales, and fishing too. Bahia Los Angeles, Loreto, those kind of places. I have never been south of Ensenada.

I almost bailed @ a spur of the moment last May :smt009 I did not make it,  but I did find a serviced called " Discover baja ".com,  I think it's a 50 or 75$ service fee, but they help you with all the red tape and were very helpful in perspectives for driving times ect. You can also get discounts like 20% rancho leonaro stays ect....If anybody has feedback on this service I would like to know for I intend to use them when I do get to bail...or have to post bail ect.... :smt003.....Danglin

Mag Bay is awesome.  Great fishing in the mangroves (corvina, halibut, juvenile grouper, bonefish, and tons of bay bass) and although I haven't been there in the winter, I hear it's a great winter spot because you don't have to deal with the big waves of the Pacific or the high winds of the Sea of Cortez.

Here's an old report from my May 2005 trip which was pretty similar to the type of trip it sounds like you want to take.

and a video montage from the same trip

Danglin,

It's an old post and video .. but every now and then it seems appropriate so I shamelessly digg them up again.
