Seasoned yaker here....but this is new territory for me. I've heard the good striper reports coming from this area and I'm considering making the hour drive on Friday. The tide looKS to be in favor around 830am. Again, I've never paddled this area but can imagine the current can rip through the mouth of the bay. And then theres the boat traffic....is this place worth all the fuss right now? Taking the sig other and really don't want to get sucked out to sea :)

I use to work on a charter boat out of sf (basstub/potluck) unless you can find a good guide I would look elsewhere pretty crowded and fishing on the outgo can leave you in places you dont want to be. Check out Jim Smith report on the happy hooker and see if there are some other options.

Is it worth the fuss.....depends, what's your tolerance level for having 50 cal and a zodiac full of m4's aimed at your face, then being placed on a no fly list? :)

The real south tower drift goes on over a huge rock pile directly under the bridge between the fort and the first tower, ever since 9/11 it's been off limits.   Id imagine you can bump around outside the zone but staying in the area may draw a suspect eye fr the coasties.
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

We ran it Sunday with 50 of our closest friends. Lots of small stripers caught in combat conditions. Not sure how much fun it would be in a yak as I was surrounded by 36 ft of fiberglass LOL.

That's exactly what I didn't want (but needed!) to hear. Maybe we will just cruise over to the flats for sharks and rays…would sure like to stick a few keeper striper, though.

Been there, bout a month ago.  Launched at coast guard station.  Dropped traps in about 80' of water at point Diablo, then pedelled to point Bonita lighthouse for a half limit of various cod. Was able to get 5 nice dungies on the way back.  But never got harassed by coast guard.  Just be aware of huge Big 10' swells from cargo ships blowing by every hour.  Kinda made it difficult pullin traps up.  Time the tide so your not coming in on the outgo.  Hobie PA did pretty good.  Just be well conditioned, stretch out, be safe.
