So, I've been scoping Threshers now...and I wonder if the pod is too far forward to pedal effectively? Just speculating and wondering. Maybe the seat will have a mod to scoot forward or the pedals will be extended closer to the seat...

I think Wildy still has some time to suss that out.  The angles of pedals are extraordinarily important for comfort of the kayaker.  Native had an issue with the angle of recline with their first pedal boats and has used its experience for their current kayaks.  I do wonder how the angle of the pedal pod will still accommodate opening of the center console for stashing gear.

Incredibly exciting news. It's great to see pedal power spread, and the way Wildy is accomplishing it (the modular pod) is well thought out.

It sure looks like another cycle / prop design. I hope it won't be all 'murdery' like the Propel (don't get insulted, it is a solid option that has its own particular tradeoffs. I like it better for flat and deep water).

The Native design drafts much more than a Mirage Drive, and the unit is rigid metal. Retracting it means swinging it onto the deck, where the metal skeg that protects the prop points squarely at the user's face. I'm keen to see how Wildy handles that particular challenge. It looks like it will be an installed or totally out of the yak proposition. I hope it will be surf friendly.

Through hull prop systems have to be deep enough to allow the prop to operate with maximum efficiency. Too close to the hull impedes water flow. Also, the prop has to be two blades not three for insertion and withdrawal in the slot so a certain prop length is mandatory so one won't be able to travel as shallow as a mirage drive by fluttering the fins. I do think a place in and pull out system without a swing apparatus is very possible. Reverse is a big plus  as well as the efficient  full pedal rotation. Key to it all though will be getting the right angles between foot, leg, back and pedals and that is not a simple task.

THey have designed a shallow draft detent position for the  motor (brilliant!), I wonder how easy it is to retract the  pedal drive for shallow conditions?

The electric motor will go 7.8 mph for 6 hours I am told.

That's the Torqeedo motor.  Are you sure they didn't mean  " At 7.8 mph it can go 6 miles " ?          I have a torqeedo, love the performance of it over the Minn Kota.

Now that you’re back, let’s talk about that motor drive. It’s a self-contained unit that plugs into the FlexPod receptacle located at the front of the cockpit in ATAK, Thresher and Tarpon 130X kayaks. It’s based on slick Torqeedo technology. It’s impressively lightweight and compact – just 15 pounds including lithium battery, which floats. Wildy predicts a speed of up to 6 mph at a range of approximately 20 miles.

I get 6 mph,,, but only 6 miles at full power.     30 mile range if moto-paddling.

Actually, Broadway Bait Rod & Gun in Sacto had a pod hanging from the ceiling 40 years ago with a trolling motor poked through the rear of the hull, and it came in camo. It was designed for duck hunters. And yes, you do need to register them as soon as you put a motor on them.  What I wonder, though, is how do we define a kayak, especially in the context of tournament fishing? Are power boats, albeit single-seaters, going to be allowed in tournaments? How do we level that playing field? Different categories for paddlers, peddlars, and motor-driven "yaks"? Concessions for ADA/Wounded Warriors? Food for thought and discussion.
Warning! Retiree; Knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it.

I don't know of a single kayak fishing tournament that allows anything BUT human power; ie no motors, sails.  Paddle or pedal power only.  That's fairly well defined.  The only gray area to ever come about was "are canoes allowed".  Gray areas are generally left up to the tournament director(s) discretion.

Thanks. I'm the new guy, and the idea of competing against motors wasn't sitting well.

The only tournament I know of that has a truly leveled playing field is Simply Fishing.
