I'm a sucker for albacore and always get excited this time of year.  Last year, it just didn't pan out in any significant way.  What will happen this year in the Bay Area?

The Monterey Buoy hit 60.6 today, although some of that is likely daytime warming.  Last night, it held at 58.5, so it is at least that.  We'll see what happens tonight.  A few days ago it was consistently less than 57.  Composite SST's shows this as a connected stream of warm water.  There is another warmer stream coming in from offshore towards the Pioneer, and another warmer stream coming from the south towards the Weenie/451.

When is IT going to happen?  I got my first charter booked for July 19, so hopefully before then!

I have been home canning albacore from the docks the last couple years and would love to catch some of my own this year.

Some were caught out of Humboldt out of Shelter Cove and Eureka as well as some from Fort Bragg too.  Yea Charleston and Newport is the hotspot on the Pig.  Acres reported by some folks.

My neighbor has his 38ft Fountain ready to go in Newport.  I'm trying to figure out if I can come up with some funds to go.

At least some were caught up north already. Definitely a good sign compared to last year.

I used to go out prospecting for Albacore. got way too expensive in a boat capable of 40 gal of fuel an hour. My partner went a couple times last yr looking. Water was way too warm. This yr the water is warm already. Down in the channel islands a few people caught Dorados.  And even one Wahoo that I know of. Last year was weird If this yr is the same a trip to yak fish Channel islands may be in order.

Heck, there have been some kayak anglers down in San Diego that have caught bluefin tuna this year, launching from shore.

My Long Beach buddies have been getting a consistent yellowtail bite right off the oil islands for weeks now.  They are hearing reports of 50+ yellowfin a little further south.  Not a word about albacore.

If it turns on, how about an NCKA specific charter. I'm in

I've been waiting to slay some tuna.  But this year looks like a repeat of last year.  Warm water is out there but just not close and not the right color.  There is good warm/blue water out there, 75 miles.  Couple boats went looking up to 100 miles on Sunday out of Santa Cruz and monterey.  No fish and no signs of life.    There is no defined temp break.  If u look at the water temp charts and chlorophyll, they have breaks up north and they are slaying em again.  Same thing happened last year.  Without temp breaks it's a total crap shoot finding fish.  It's still early and I'm hoping that albacore is not a bust.  But we may have a shot at some exotics, a Bonita was caught last week and who knows what else might be out there.

I'm still optimistic that things will hopefully change for the better in our neck of the woods and have started tuning up my tuna gear and am ready to roll!

If u are in need of a fix soon, go north or south.

That break outside the pioneer/guide is warm, hard, and clear.  That one is definitely tuna water.  But still too far out of boat range.  The one coming into the buoy is mediocre, it's a bet.  The one coming up to the Weenie is warm and dirty, likely no tuna in it.  These things can move 20-30 miles in a day, but unfortunately that can mean towards us, as well as away.

I've been using Captain Tom Joseph of http://www.fishonsportfishing.com the past few years.  He trailers his 4-pack and will launch out of Santa Cruz of HMB depending on where the bite is.  He fishes hard, so be prepared to put in a long day, as in don't be surprised to be leaving the dock at 5AM and returning at 8PM.  He will go far to find them and he will motor out fast.  The only downside is he doesn't carry live bait, so it's a troll and slide game.
