Anyone or any group thinking about heading down to Big Sur area for half a day trip soon? It's been 3 weeks now since I was last down there and missed the fishing. I like to join or vise versa.

I was down there last weekend out of lime kiln state park and in about an hour had 2 twin 29" lings and nice brown. Killer fishing down there can't wait to get back!! :smt044
Good luck

Awesome! The drive is super long and slow but the fishing is by far the best. This was 3 weeks ago. Hopefully, we will head back again soon.

How was the launch out of the cove? Been down there to check it out but never fished it.

The launch varies on conditions so check the swell report before you go. Last month when we went , the waves was crashing the beach and was hectic launching and landing.
This coming weekend should be good to launch there.

It was my first beach launch with waves. Going out was not to bad but my wife and I went swimming on the way in. Good times :smt003

Cracked a rib and lost some gear there a couple years ago, I didn't hop out soon enough after landing. Was strange because I was warned but just sat too long and the surf crushed me.

Awesome spot!

I was last to land ,once at a spot down there and was watching folks on the shore looking for items in the surf..gave me the idea to take my time and count the duration of a few sets that had a wicked sneaker set mixed in every third set...paddling in/seeing guys scrambling around on the beach and  knew what that meant  :smt044..
I heard later that like 3 outta 7 of our group took a ride....lol

this beach cove has some good gear that washes up the next day I bet..

For Lime kiln State Park there is a day use parking fee but I'm not sure how much it is. it's pretty easy access to the beach but make sure to check the swell before you go as I've seen some nasty waves. I consider myself between intermediate and advance kayaker and likely not go back unless it's a 2-3 ft swell like this weekend..

I haven't been back there since it closed years ago. I would love to get back down there if there's a group going.

Lime kiln and Monestary are very steep shore breaks and are the most dangerous launches in NorCal as far as kayak fishing. BH is a close second. Mill is probably the safest launch but can be a bitch too and the portage sucks. The good news is I heard the NCKA hating fat ranger is no longer there. The fishing is good and the scenery is great and once in your lifetime, everybody should fish there once. I don't fish there anymore because from the Bay Area the Sonoma coast is a shorter an easier drive and the fishing is almost as good and as far as lings maybe better.  In addition there isn't the long portage, surf and sharks. I learned how to kayak fish there and it is sentimental to me but the commies hit Lucia really hard during the salmon closure years and it hasn't recovered yet. If you have a 1-3' NW swell go for it but west and SW swells greater than 2-3' will close out all of the launches unless you are an advanced kayaker. If you go, bring the minimum gear and rig for a wet landing.

Oh and the other common launches Willow and Garapata have long sucky portages and are more known for surfing and white sharks than fishing. Garapata gets hit hard by the Monterey fleet too. Partington has the mother of all portages and a treacherous rock garden slot launch with muscle lined rocks which shred your hull and the fishing isn't great because the locals hit it hard. Then there are the clandestine pirate launches where kayaks are roped down cliffs to the beach. We won't talk about them lest the ghost of B*****n strike us dead.  :smt044 The name that shall never be spoken.  :smt004

I've never been to the sonoma coast but I do hear it's good fishing there as well. Hopefully someday I could check it out with some of the members. Lings are abundant and easy to catch thus I'm more interested in catching vermilion. It is a long slow drive but it's worth the trip.
