Welcome.

Man... I sure loved fishing the Central Coast while I was down there for school from '02 to '09.

You still down there? If so, tie up a 1/2 oz lead head on some light tackle, slap on a 4" Big Hammer in pearl or Bay Smelt color,  cast it around the edges of the shallow kelp beds at Port San Luis and stop and go retrieve it back in bouncing bottom with each stop. You'll get that yak halibut you're looking for if you put in some time.

Thx for that intel on halibut Alexb, I'll for sure give it a try! The humpback migration  & baitfish going nuts out at PSL today. Birds diving all over; definitely a good time to fish.

Going out to Cayucous on Thursday to bounce for Hali's, then PSL  following week.

Nice, cayucos is a good Hali spot. I've caught a couple good ones from the shallow (5-15 foot deep) kelp beds right around the pier. Same technique I mentioned earlier. For some reason Central Coast halibut just love 4" big hammer swimbaits...

If you haven't read this article, check it out. Lots of good info in there:

Good Hali article! Back to Cayucous ! Just fished Shell beach & pulled in 3 big brown rf , all around 18" . Lots of sand between structure for Hali's . Gotta put my time in to have a chance!

Nice work! I spent MANY hours pounding the sand at Shell Beach (between the kayak shop and the exposed wash rock offshore). Not one halibut for me from that area. I always much between luck for flatties when I launched from Avila or Port San Luis. Not nearly as many rockfish over there, though.

I have also caught a couple good halibut from inside Morro harbor, but you have to deal with lots of rays and leopard sharks out there if you fish bait.

Good luck!
