A friend of a friend got their fishing kayak stolen last night from racquet club circle off of expressway in rohnert park.

it's a Equinox 10. 4 Costco brand kayak, that he spent all week customizing.

He was planning on taking her out for the first time this morning and strapped it on top of his car last night. Woke up to it gone.

[kayak has been found and is home with owner!]

Damn Thieves! :smt013

Should be easy to identify with the custom work done to it.  Hope he finds it.

I strapped my yak on my rack the night before I was leaving to San Luis Res a few months back.
I was super paranoid about it getting stolen.
I ended up putting a bike lock through the scupper hole and onto the racks.
Bummer man! I hope your buddy finds his yak in good order.
People who steal s*!t pisses me off. I feel for him.

Bummer... That's the kind of thing that keeps me up at night before fishing trips EVEN THOUGH I always lock my yak to the car overnight.

I just use a 15' thick steel cable w/loops and a combo lock (both from Home Depot). It comes in really handy. Great for locking my wheels up on the beach, too (long enough to reach around rip-rap, fence, whatever). I even lock up my yak in the backyard sometimes if I'm too tired to properly store it in the basement when I get home from a session.

Yeah you have to run a cable lock thru your yak and lock it to your rails.unlock it in the morning before you drive off.
Thats messed up didn't even get to take it out.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Curious as to why you would unlock before you drive off?

I put two thick cable locks through my yak and both rails. I don't unlock until its time to take the yak down.

Bummer about your friends, friends yak. Hopefully it's recovered soon.

Vik/VK showed me the MasterLock/Python cable locks and they are Awesome to run thru your scupper holes in order to lock yur yak to your racks. I have been useing them all the time now. It is a great deturrent but nothing is 100% theft proof.my 2 cents

At a certain point, they'll just take the car/truck + Yak's in one SWOOP!

He doesn't even look old enough to drive.
Yep, the python/cobra lock (whatever it's called) is da all around bomb for locking up kayaks and wheeleze.
It will easily fit thru scupper holes and the actual wheels of the wheeleze along with the cotter pins.
I keep mine locked all the way to the destination.
No excuse for not locking it up overnight.
I HATE thieves.

I only unlock mine before driving because I don't want to dangle a 15' cable. I guess I could just double/triple it to take up the slack...

Sad. Your friend is paying "crime tax"- the value of the stuff stolen. Hopefully the thief will be caught and have to pay even more.    I'll be on the lookout.
I lock mine up along with the Rolleez (old name, same cart) even when they are in my garage hanging on my wall, in case I forget and leave the door open all night.  Make criminals work - they hate it.
