For perch ( most of my surf fishing) i use either my 10' clarus (8-17) or my 11'6 rainshadow (8-12) i built, Couldnt imagine going much shorter personally.

Serious surf fishing or just casual? If serious, no shorter than 10'6 and if casual, everything else will work.
Surf fishing to me is addicting! Once you figure out how to read the break and identify the holes from traveling lanes and start hooking fish you'll learn more and find out you would like to try a longer rod :smt003 I'm already Addicicted since 1971 :smoke I use a 12'6" shimano convergence 4-8lb.1/32-5/16 Power Light, slow action. With a cheep $20 dollar Diawa sweepfire 4000-2B reel, loaded with 8lb Maxima.

Thats a light setup, Alien!

Is that what you landed your striper on?

The lamiglass i'm oogling is 1/2-3/4 8-12lb, hoping itd be a good striper setup, might try to push it with 15lb test and 1oz lures.

You land 7-18# stripers with that rig? You've got some mad angling skills
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Surf stripers are not like anything you catch in the river or lakes or bay waters. These fish are thick, heavy shoulders and run for the hills as soon as you set the hook.

Yes. I wish i had more money to spend on some top notch rods and reels, some day may be . but with this rod i been using it for perch and caught small strippers by accident so i have confident it could handle a 20lb+ fish. The $20. dollar reel i only had to replace once in 3years Oh! I use 25lb floracarbon for leader.  And i'm just waiting for the day i hook into a really big fish from the surf to spool me :smt003

what size reels does everyone use for a 10' medium rod? I have a shimano symetre 4000 thats pretty compact, the 5000's usually jump up quite a bit in size, i wouldnt mind a 5000 series penn battle II  :)

That's the reel I use.  Got it when someone on here posted a sale at Sports Chalet.  Works fine, just rinse it well with fresh water after.

hows the weight balance on it Jerry ? I have a 6500 and it is chunky, not sure how much of a difference it is against the 5000 , but my symetre 4000 is pretty tiny

Everything feels fine to me.  I've never noticed the balance for the few hours I fish with it each time.   I followed this article how to rig for surf perch fishing and it's been my method I use;
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=10

For the size of the weight, tackle and bait, leader lengths, etc, it casts just fine for me. It's a small reel for the ocean, but then I'm fishing for perch and haven't tried it for stripper.  I have used this reel for bass and it works good for those I catch; up to 20".  I'm sure it would be too light for ling but I've got other gear for that.

So I caved and went with a new rod and reel.... lol

ended up finding a pretty good deal on a lamiglass x11 9'6 medium rod and a penn battle II 4000 series ( a little heavier and larger than the symetre 4000 so it should help with balance) , the 5000 series battle is almost 7 ounces heavier, I have a slammer 560 that I may use too but that thing is bulky, trying to keep things light :) . Not sure if I should go with 30lb or 50lb braid , the 4000 will hold 185 yards of 30 lb, not sure about 50 but i'd rather not get spooled if I can help it, hah, it'll be a dedicated surf striper rod (possibly for chrome hunting). I'll keep the 7' setup for inland fishing or when i'm OTW
