The SS doesn't affect sonar. It doesn't seem to affect rockfish but I never fished shallow water. Spearos use it and it doesn't seem to scare off fish.

I don't really know why wilderness medic has such a problem with these, but this quote from the last discussion might illuminate the point.

I thought some dude was already hit wearing these...

People still die with seatbelts on sometimes. Doesn't mean seat belts don't work.

Seat belts don't cost an extra $600 and an auto accident is a taaaad bit more common than a shark attack. Oh uh, and they've been proven on many, many levels of various tests. I am not convinced that the shark shield is even going to help stop a white, but if you are go for it...

Did you read any of the Australian study?  What part were you unimpressed with?  It did conclude with saying more study is warranted but the results were impressive on the pinniped decoy study, which is the one I'm sure everyone here cares about.

And seat belts for my pickup run $400, it's not like they are free or anything. My point being that just because a shark might have hit someone using a shark shield doesn't mean that shark shields don't deter sharks. In much the same way that seatbelts deter Death, although he may still come calling.

I don't know about yours, but my wetsuit didn't come with a shark shield. My vehicle however did, I didn't have to spend hundreds extra on it.

For me, with any type of hunting, part of the thrill and enjoyment is being in nature, with the flow of the food chain. If I could spend hundreds on a magic electrical device that stopped mountain lions, rattlesnakes, and any other "dangerous" animal from attacking me, I wouldn't... Not on land, not on water. So regardless of it's possible deterrence, there's that.

If a white is can swim at around 25mph and is hunting on sight, how is something that they can only sense within 3 feet going to stop it? If i'm within 3 feet of a shark and it's not chomping me already, I don't think it's going to.

Personal opinion and preference, didn't mean it to come off as rude or confrontational, just not for me. :smt001

LMFAO!  Apparently you did know why. But hopefully you feel better after digging through posts to pull that up.  I've explained why I don't like them and think they're garbage. Doesn't mean I have a problem with them knock yourself out and buy one. They just aren't for me and that's my opinion

Rhyak, do you by chance have a picture of how yours is set up?  I have an idea of what I'm going to do but curious of other options.

I strap mine to my seat and send down the scupper hole. Will grab a shot next time out. My guess is this will be locked by then so will start another thread for you then.

Think that there is good argument with it stopping a shark from the full breech. Its studies show it stopping but there obviously is no guarantee and Scott over at SS will flat out say that there is no "guarantee and show you the research."

I am personally more worried about the second hit. The kayak will hold up to any breach. Does not get much bigger then what they are saying breached on my sorry azz.

In my experience the first hit sucks ya.

I would have been fine with it, but the second that if I would have landed on the other side of my yak, I probably would not be typing this out.

I for sure think it would have scared the massive shark away from my kayak.

As for the breeches vs. non breeches. The guy that got bumped 2 hours before me, the shark circled and then took a taste. So probably would have solved that.

That's my opinion on it for what its worth.

Those scenarios sound like it would help. If it was just leisurely coming up and test biting I think it would  zap it off.

As for the breaches do you have the studies showing how it would help at all against a breach on a kayak? Because the only one i've seen is this.

Which to me seems to have too many variables or inconsistencies with a kayak or diver. Look how much lower the wire is. That just gave another 7' of leeway for the shark to reconsider. On top of that how fast was the boat traveling? If it was driving somewhat fast and the shark had to swim full speed to catch up...of course it would have a lot easier time veering off as opposed to a stationary/slow moving kayak wouldn't it?

Edit: Oops sorry forgot this- :smt003 :smt001 :smt006

The definitive test would be for you to strap on the SS and jump in a shark pen.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

People aren’t supposed to look back. I’m certainly not going to do it anymore.”
