Anyone have info or contacts for fishing in Kauai?  I'm going there mid-june, and hope to get some fishing in.

Contacts?  Brother in law with an extra Prowler and lots of time on his hands?  Favorite charter skipper?  tips, tricks, etc?

Allen,

If I were as lucky as you, I'd drop a PM to Ed.  He moved to Oahu about 5 months ago and may be able to provide some info.  Or who knows?   If you're able to visit Oahu, you might even be able to hook up.

Let me know if you need someone to carry your tackle box   :smt003

I stayed at Kiahuna Plantation on Kauai a few years ago... had a blast just waking up early in the morning and fishing along the beaches for a wide array of reef fish until the beachgoers would come out and take over.

I used little strips of squid on a #6 hook with a 1/2 oz bullet weight.  A fish almost every cast... some would drive into the reef and break you off.  Strong little buggers.   Can use casting bubbles too instead of bullet weights.  That's all the fishing I did there though.  Nothing from a boat or yak but a fun way to start the day nonetheless.

Here's a report from back then.

Allen, I will ask around and see if any one has any recommendations for Kauai.  I have been fishing with some guys that fish all over the islands so they might have some info.  That is a good time of the year for Ono or Wahoo though.  Trolling fresh mackerel or ballyhoo beyond the reef for pelagics is what most of the kayak fishermen do around here.  There are a lot of great reef fish to go for that fight well, they either troll small bait fish, squid strip or small rapalas. I wish you were coming to Oahu we could do ocean in the morning and Peacock bass in the afternoon.  I will get back to you with your info soon.  I was actually going to ask Bill if he would put up a Hawaii section.  I think it would beneficial to get a group of Hawaii fisherman involved in NCKA partially for situations like this.  I know a lot of guys come and visit here and it would be great to have NCKA friendly guys to link up with.  Right now they have no hook up board here in Hawaii so I think it would get people interested in posting.

mooch:

there is one charter company called Hana'Pa there that I might book with in your honor.

I would prefer just kayak fishing if possible, but I gotta get something while I'm there, even if it is a "family trip," this time I'm getting ahead of the game, save my money for a charter if neccesary, and book ahead of time after research.

Allen,

I have a book called "fishing hawaii style" that is a good read.  I would be happy to loan it to you.  It includes plans for making your own lures...good winter project.  I am in scotts valley so I could easily get it to you.

Best place I've fished on Kauai is Na Pali.  There are a couple tours that go around this area of coast.

I was there in Oct '05 and went out with True Blue charters out of Lihue.  Their boat was a lot like the sport charters on S.F. Bay.  The Hana'Pa charter had nicer boats but cost more.  Our captain and deck hand (Junior) were great and worked hard but the fishing was slow.  Landed a couple of small mahi mahi and had one ono/wahoo come unbuttoned.  I'll post a couple of pictures tonight of the bluest water I've ever seen!

Here's a couple of the Mahi Mahi we caught ...not very sporting on 200lb test or whatever it was (the reel was the size of a Folger's can!).  Oh well, gotta be ready for the big tuna!  :smt005

Here's one I meant to put in the last post (Junior the deck hand), along with one of our fishing companions that day!  I was thinking about inserting a plumbing joke here but did not want to offend any NCKA plumbers.  This guy is now forever known in our family as "Butt crack guy!"
