HOW Nation -  We lost a great man Thursday. Many of y’all met Dino’s cousin, Roland Abiva at the Conference in March. He passed away on Thursday doing what he loved – kayak fishing.  He was fishing with friends that had come up to fish the Halibut opener. He was preparing to launch when his kayak capsized. He was standing and requesting assistance to help retrieve his kayak and gear when he collapsed as waves came behind him. He was quickly pulled to shore by friends that were also members of our HOW team. They quickly began CPR. He had been sick for a long time, but he would not let it slow him down. He has had an ongoing medical condition but cause of death is still pending an autopsy. The media reports are wrong - He was not immediately face down in the water when his kayak capsized.
Roland is very much loved by our kayak angling community and by all who knew him. He was a very kind and generous man. He loved the water, and he loved helping our local Veterans and Military Servicemen and he especially loved being at Hobuck not just for the fishing but for the serenity and the friends he made there. He has kayak fished the ocean for many years. He competed annually in tournaments from Shelter Cove, CA to Depoe Bay, OR and here in WA. He was very skilled in kayak fishing and knew how to handle himself in the ocean. He knew his limitations. We will plan to have a Memorial for him at Hobuck in future.

Please send your condolences and prayers to [email protected] .
Please allow the NW HOW family time to remember their brother. More information will follow.
Dino and Jim
PS - If you have ANY PICTURES of Roland from the conference or elsewhere please send them to [email protected]. Dino and friends will be holding a memorial at the bay they loved and would appreciate any memories.  Dino will think about best to honor Roland. ””

I had the pleasure of staying and fishing with Roland each of the past 2 years at Gimme Shelter.  This year, they decided to stay up in WA and fish the Neah Bay halibut opener.  I was just thinking of Roland as he asked me to send him some meyer lemons from my tree.  I was devastated this morning to hear of his accident.  I'm just left speechless and crying.   :smt010

So Sad, but poietic. R.I.P. Thoughts and prayers too friends and family. It is a heavy load for the friends that were with him at the time, but know of the comfort he had with friends to usher him along, doing what he loved to do will always be a comfort.

I was just with him in Florida, he seemed fine…  funny, gentle cool dude…

I remember him looking me in the eye several times, and giving me advice… it kind of struck me as he was so grounded,

like he had made a peace with something that was unshakable within him…

I now know, he had made his peace long ago and every day was just another day in paradise…

Yes, we have lost a Great One…

Glad to have met you Rolland, I'll never forget the conversation we had as long as I live…

  Thanks…    :smt004
