hey ling, my son and I was considering going out there to fish.  where do you recommend to launch from and which general area for rockfish?

welcome to the site!!

Hey Chaeki, my name is actually Aviv, not Ling :smt005 if you are heading to the santa cruz area with your son i would try fishing the area in front of the lighthouse in about 50-70 ft of water. you can either launch out of the harbor or at the boardwalk. its a shorter paddle from the boardwalk. if you are feeling adventurous you can hit the coast north of SC for some bigger fish.

Thanks!  How is the parking at the boardwalk?  Is that hourly?

parking is tough around the boardwalk. i wouldnt launch from there unless you dont have much time. but if you do, launch from the beach on north side of the wharf. for parking, you can park up the hill a little bit further north from the beach where the surfers walk down the stairs from the cliff.

I've been wanting to check out launching there to reach the Lighthouse area easier.  Need to go check out where to offload the gear, how to haul the yak to the water, and where to park to launch out of Cowels.

Yeah it's a great spot to launch if you're going out for an afternoon session. There are showers there and parking isn't a nightmare during the week. Plus no launch fees. There is a plastic ramp set up there that basically runs across the beach to the water so no need for hauling over sand. I would say if your going during the week, you should give it a shot, but on a weekend, the crowds and all the questions from people just destroy the experience. I've caught some big fish drifting from the lighthouse back into cowbells. Super productive at times. For the picture below, I got those three in 2 hrs last year, during an afternoon mission.
