My favorite is a 6oz chrome hex bar jig. Lots of luck with it.

My setup looks pretty much like RBark's.  Only difference is that I use 3oz. lead with a 6" swimbait and I use a dropper loop for the shrimp fly.

Last year I lost a few big fish when my leader broke so I need to re-think leader set-ups.  I'm gonna switch from 25# fluoro to 30# mono.  Also thinking about trying 3-way swivels instead of a dropper loop.  Thoughts?

It's been a big ling season already and I haven't been out yet!  Save some for me!

in my case, i am not a fish eater just love catching big fish.
to get big fish you have to have bait in the water, i keep going bigger and bigger. it does 2 things that i find inpotant.
1    a easier meal for a bigger fish, less effort more food.
2 keeps the smaller ones from biting thus keeping your bait n the water longer

I only use artificials and never use bait (unless there is NO other alternative).

My 42 years as a glassblower and inshore fisherman have released my imagination.  I now only use hand formed glass jigs.

Here's a poor picture of a ling stuck on one of my hand made glass lures.

Here's a second one of a local cabby;

My Lures are called Zodi Lures and they are hand formed from molten glass.

No lead lost to the ocean. Beach glass is jewel!

Those are unbelievably cool!  I bet the sound signature from glass is gonna make them a killer. Solid work, lookin forward to seeing one in action.

That is a really cool glass lure! Maybe this is a dumb question but, wouldnt the glass jigs break on the rocks?

Thanks for the comments. I will be fishing them at GS9. Haven't been able to build too many as of this date so I can't really sell them until later on.

To get a proper sink rate, they are slightly larger than lead jigs, but being lighter than lead they are a bit more sensitive to the rod tip.

They don't break on underwater rocks in my experience, but If you whack one on the boat they can break.

I use a 60lb mono and Lings are not shy anyway. I've broken a 60lb mono last week on a big ling. I use a heavy leader to prevent it from getting cut by the Lings' sharp teeth and spines.

I've used both three-way swivels and drop her loops and I prefer the dropper loop because it sticks out away from my line keeps my offering from getting tangled with my mainline. I do think the dropper loop is a weaker not than my terminal knots. When I get snagged and have to break the line it usually breaks at the dropper loop.

I can't imagine having to break off 60 pound mono when snaged. I have a hell of a time breaking off 40 pound.

When the bite is hot I love using small Rockfish as bait to target bigger lings. I net them as far underwater as I can reach. before they let gogo berserk.  I put the net in the water when they're halfway up so they don't see it Enter the water.

I prefer a 60 to 75 cm rail gun...preferrably with one big, thick band, and a single flopper shaft.

Jim what knot do you use to tie that  gun onto the fishing rod?
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

Hex jigs chrome from 2 to 6 oz. I seem to hang the 6's a lot more than the 2's and 4's. I also like to use a rockfish shrimpfly rig but use either big grubs or swimbaits insteadnof the shrimp fly. I use different colors and see which one gets hit more consistantly then. Typically a dark and a light color. I'm still new to ocean fishing but I am finding great success.
