I'll ask when I drop off my car on Tuesday what the deal is with cars without the extended warranty; will the do an oil consumption test and if so, do they charge, etc...

It just might pay to drive up here to Shingle Springs Subaru since they are being square with me.

I work for Honda and there is no charge for oil consumption test other than the price of an oil change. Note oil level with customer. Then we ask the customer to return within 1500 miles and check level. Good luck.

I recently met a fisherman here that is a master mechanic for Subaru in the south bay. I will mention it to him.

UPDATE:
Well, I dropped off the Subaru on Tuesday morning with no trouble at all.  They gave me a new 2015 Forester to use until my car was ready for pick-up.  On Wednesday, 4pm, I got a call that it was ready!  Went to pick it up and they went over all they did to it.  Quite a long list of stuff replaced with that short block.  I checked under the hood and it sure is a brand new motor!  No a rebuilt, that block is shiny brand new.

I asked if I needed to follow the new car oil change and break-in process and they said no.  They also said to bring it in at 7,000 miles and they would do a free oil change for all my trouble.  I can't say enough good stuff about my Subaru dealer repair shop.  These guys treated me like royalty.  In the past, every dealer repair shop treated me like a carny treats a carnival goer.  Ha!  Doing their best to take my money and give me as little in return as possible.
I drove it yesterday to Napa, where I am this weekend visiting family.  It drives and behaves as it always has.  Good!

I'm sorry, but I forgot to ask about cars without extended warranty.  However, I'd recommend giving them a call and asking them.  I know they will do their best to give you honest information.

BTW, that 2015 Subaru Forester I was loaned?  I'll keep my 2011 thank-you-very-much.  It's much taller and much, MUCH harsher ride.  The engine performance is detuned as well.  The dash and the video screen are nice, but distracting.  While taller, there really isn't more room inside.  I mainly notice it with the legs; the 2011 sits low and more of a sports car feel.  The 2015 has tall seats and more like a truck feel.  So it not only rides rough like a truck, it feels and handles like one too.  I would imagine it would be much more difficult to hoist a kayak up on that rack as well.  My Subaru is easy to access the rack.  The new one would require a step stool to access my Yakama Rocket Box.  Not easy to do and even a bit dangerous in wet and icy conditions like hauling my skis.

In terms of the dash and video screen, when I first bought the Audi i didn't like it either but now that I've gotten used to it I see it's benefit.  Backing into spots is easy, it's nice to have navigation available and finding restaurants and gas stations is convenient.  It's obviously not a necessity but when you're looking for something specific it's nice.

Jerry, glad you got good results with the dealer. I am a Toyota fan and notice customer support changes with ownership turnover. Luckily, the local dealer is giving good service again.

Wow, refreshing. Very few good experiences with car dealers for me. Some are ok but have never felt like they were really lookin out for me. Glad it worked out so well.
