That is so awesome. Nice work. Are you concerned about missed shots over the fence or high? I know it would have to be a reeeaaally bad shot but.... I've been wanting to make one in my backyard. I have plenty of distance, but am concerned about a freak shot high and houses being behind
That is my fear too ....  I have a nice LONG front yard but I would be shooting towards a busy road.  If I shot crossways in the fame yard/field, I would have the neighbors show horses on one side or the neighbors cows on the other so those aren't ideal directions.  Should I go with a larger backstop?  I'll have kids shooting too.

You can hang netting like a screen around it too. Loose, small netting stops an arrow right now. Back at Shooting Solutions where I did a lot of instructing for new shooters, we had netting along the shooting lanes suspended from the ceiling. Lots of times people aim up as they draw, and if an arrow gets away, the netting stopped it. Not sure how well it would last outdoors unless you got UV resistant netting, or a way to put it up and take it down easily.

Seems like it would have to be near cheesecloth to stop any arrow no?

I have a second lot I would use as a start, aim towards my own house as a backdrop... But even with a net or bigger backstop it's the bought of a freak accident like a sneeze or bee making me grossly shoot over the house. Any direction has the potential to impact someone else's house or property.

Is that a silly improbably concern ?

I believe it was about 3/16" netting. Yeah, planning for the inevitable is key. A cracked knock can send your arrow into who knows what. I shoot into my garage, and had an arrow get away two years ago and take out my hot water tank! It can and will happen.

How far can/will an arrow fly from a modern bow?

Even though I'm in a pretty wooded area with a little property I think I would need one of those mile high golf nets to feel 100% safe haha...

I missed a duck last year with a standard arrow fletch (out of flu flu's) and that arrow is still in orbit! I would imagine it is possible to shoot an arrow and have it travel 400-500 yards easily, and farther with strong tail winds. I don't know, I just know that you will never find the dang thing again!

I only have a forest on a hill behind me so for now it's a non issue.
Believe me, I'd LOVE to have it facing the other way because of the sun (I shoot from north to south). As the sun sets it's right in my eyes. But I have a street with neighbors so that's not an option.  I could try switching to shooting lefty, but that would guarantee arrows all over the place.

I think "we" need to give the range a full on test fire; then we will officially give it our blessing! :smt003

There is actually a safety feature installed.
On the other side of the wall is a sliding white PVC pipe.
Any time I shoot beyond 30 yards (out of view of anyone) I slide the pipe out blocking the pathway.
If anyone limbos under or hurdles over, well then, they're on their own.  :smt011
