After skunking the salmon opener we decided to go for rockfish during Ethan's spring break.  The ramp at the coast guard pier was closed off with a bunch of sea lions, so we carried the yak over to the beach side to launch.  The beach was nice and calm that morning with the wind picking up in the afternoon.  We were able to both catch about 3 rockfish in the shallows, then called it for a day.  It was time well spent together just hanging out father and son.

Your videos are great, Chaeki; thanks for posting. What advice do you have on kayaks that work well for taking a kid out on the water?

The best kayak to take out with kids is one that can hold the combined weight of you both and won't flip you when leaning over the side.  LOL!  I have only tested two kayaks, so I can only comment on the ocean malibu xl 2 and the santa cruz raptor.

For three people to ride, I would say the malibu since it has the higher weight capacity: (keep in mind, if you lean over you either tip, or do what my wife does, throw the kid overboard)

I have since sold my malibu after owning it for many many years and had a opportunity to get the santa cruz raptor.  Went ahead and had a custom seat installed by Jim so that I can continue to take my son where ever I go.  Now my son can relieve himself over the side w/o having to worry about tipping.  (no video of that, but I can still hear the words, " dad I pee'd on the kayak " ROFL!!!!@!@!

Quick edits, I use movie maker. (plus its free)  If I plan on spending time on it, I use Premiere.  I learned it by trial and error, after 100 videos you kinda get the hang of it.  Occasionally I would watch a youtube tutorial and see if I can add that to the video.

I have tried previously other video editors, Sony Vegas and some 3rd party ones.  It all comes down to which one I am familiar with and can edit fast enough, so I can go back to drinking coffee and watching the kids.

Very cool video Ethan and Chaeki. Do you mind sharing you recipe for smoked rockfish? I have an electric smoker, looks similar to yours. What temp do you aim for and for how long? Thanks a lot.
