I was about to prepare everything to go to Santa Cruz in the morning but looking outside, I'm not convinced it is a good idea. The forecast looks decent early morning with wind picking up around 11AM (13 mph with max at 21) with a little chance of rain. Anybody else going?

I was thinking about it too. Here's the forecast I see:

2NM S SANTA CRUZ CA

Sunday

Variable winds less than 5 kt becoming E 5 to 8 kt. A chance of showers, mainly after 11am. Mixed swell...W 3 ft at 11 seconds and SSW 1 ft at 17 seconds. Wind waves around 1 ft.

That doesn't look too bad.

I launched today at about 6:45 and was back in the harbor by 11:00. The weather was cold, but otherwise not bad. I brought my downrigger and planned to do a couple of practice drops, then switch over and fish for lings. Howeer, there were so many birds and lots of bait, so I decided to stay with the salmon trolling, just in case. I got a few takers, but nothing stuck. (I know they were probably just lingcod or rockfish, but let me have my fantasies...). Anyways, I figure it was worth a shot.

It seems most people got a few lingcod, but I didn't get the impression that the action was exactly fast.

With luck, there will soon be salmon within kayak range, but that's more likely to be in Monterey...

There are no MORE fish at Santa Cruz.

I took my friend and his son Tim out today.  It was Tim's first day in the salt and he had a blast.
The weather cooperated with light winds, only a few sprinkles and the swell was almost nothing.

Tim caught 12 lings, including a 29" and 30" and 1 cab 21".  My friend caught a PB cab - 25", and 8 ling.
I ended the day with only 5 ling.

Overall, a great day to start the season.  We brought home a lot of meat. I'll try to post a picture later when I get home.

I take back what I said about the action seeming to be slow. That's impressive!

Where did you go? The mile buoy, the light house?

My friend and his son Tim in my old blue Outback

The ones we kept

We went up past the light house and out from there.  I think at one point we were 2.5 miles from the harbor.  I still can't believe the newb netted 12 ling today.  Needless to say he is hooked.
