I won’t be able to attend the tournament at Rollins Lake in April so I took the opportunity to check it out today as I’ve never fished there.  I launched at 7:30 out of Greenhorn and tried to find some trout with a night crawler dodger combo.  I was convinced that they would fall to this old school method.  Not a chance.  After  trolling for a couple of hours I went after some bass.  Finally after going thru all my tackle I found something they wanted…chartreuse spinner baits.  2 bass averaging 14 inches fell to this lure.  Soon after I tried a Rat L Trap and started to catch of all things…trout.  I landed 4 trout all about 12-13 inches.  At 1:30 I called it a day.  The WX was stellar today with just a light breeze.  This lake/campground is a beauty.  I’m sure you all are going to have a great time there.  A few photos for your approval…

The WX was outstanding today.

This lake has fish.

The first volunteer.

Then the trout showed up.

Saw a scuba diver today....he just popped up and scared the hell out of me!

Heading to the ramp.

If the mouth goes past its eye them it is a largemouth. If the mouth doesn't, then it is a spot.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

Also if they have teeth on the tongue, it's a spot.

Rollins is a great fishery but you need to crack the nut. The guy who just shows up and throws the normal stuff is in for a surprise. Thanks for the report!

Sam, I think that was Ron - Weimarian doing some crappie scouting...  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Also if they have teeth on the tongue, it's a spot.

Not 100% true. Variations do occur.quite regularly.  The rear of the jaw hinge will be past the the center of the eye on LMB and not on the other 3 species. Also, a lot of people think that a red eye indicates a Smallmouth, but all 4 black species in Nor Cal can exhibit Red eyes. Spots have neatly aligned rows of spots on the belly, that is where the name comes from. Also spots will have a very defined lateral line with larger patches of dark as this fish has.  LMB will not have neatly aligned rows on the belly, but possible irregular rows. LMB may or may not display a lateral line at all. SMB will not have rows of spots, but a splotchy side and possible vertical bars too. Some SMB have no vertical barring. Hope this may help.
