I run 20 or 25 lb P-Line CXX for my main line and 30-lb p-Line CXX for my leaders.

I will probably step up to 40-lb leaders this year. (Salmon are very toothy). Leaders are hard tied with two hooks (snelled).

Braided line are smaller in diameter so it cut through water better >> less drag. Is there any specific reason you use mono?

The short answer is that I just prefer mono over braid. I use P-Line CXX almost exclusively for all the fishing I do; always have.

The long answer is that mono is stretchy, which helps keep tension on a spastic salmon stuck to a barbless hook. I like having that extra shock absorption between me and the fish.

If you opt for braided line, make sure you're using a rod with some give to it. With braid, your only shock absorber is your rod (unless you add a top shot of mono).

Thanks Alex. P-Line CXX is what I prefer too when it comes to mono. Very strong line and cheap.

No prob.

Lots of folks happily use braid for salmon, I just prefer mono. And yes, P-Line is very strong for the price. I see no reason to go over 25-lb for my main line, since I keep a pretty loose drag anyway.

I run 30 to 40 pound mono main line with 20 to 25 pound leaders - lighter if I have someone fishing in the rocks.

I've always fished mono and don't care for braid.  I like the shock absorption and can live with the resistance.

I can't wait to salmon fish in the ocean three weeks from tomorrow!

Noob question... are octopus hooks considered "circle hooks?"  Or are there specific octopus circle hooks?

No and you wouldn't use circle hooks for trolling anyways.  Circle hooks are required when mooching south of Horse mountain.  The circle hooks must be less that 5" apart from bottom of the top hook to the bottom of the second hook and the point should do a 90 degree bend toward the shank

Mark -

Gamakatsu does make an inline circle octopus barbless hook which is legal for mooching. Get the 5/0 size for herring. http://www.allinonemarinesports.com/product/gamakatsu-inline-octopus-circle-barbless-hooks-161914-1.htm?variations=1134699

For trolling I use Matzuo sickle hooks for trolling. Octopus for 2 hook rigs and siwash for spoons and apex. It's hard to bend the barb back but they are good hooks.

For Shelter Cove if I was starting out to keep it simple I would run a double deep six with a watermellon apex or green coyote spoon on a 20-25# leader. Early season, running lures (junk) works fine. Tray bait is expensive and your going to lose a lot to rockfish. You can use your jig stick with braid but you will need a very soft rod.

Mono is good for stretch while playing a fish but braid will give a better hook set. No stretch usually equals quicker and deeper penetration by the hook. Half a dozen of one six of the other between braid and mono overall in salmon trolling.

I prefer to fight salmon with the traditional set up that Eric uses, mono main line with fiberglass rod. Most old school hard core salmon guys still use this setup and it is cheap and durable. I use a Calstar 270-7 with a Daiwa saltist LW LC with 25-30# mono. I use it for diver plane shallow and DR. If I am fishing 80-120' I switch to braid main line with a sinker release or double deep 6. The braid allows you to get deeper with less weight. You have to get a rod with the correct flex for this set up. Too stiff and the salmon can break the leader. I use a Lamiglas triflex but the lighter trevalas or ugly sticks should probably work OK.

I've been using a 7' medium action Ugly Stick Tiger for trolling divers and sinker releases. Price was right and it works just fine.

This year I'll mostly be fishing with the DR, so I picked up a Lamiglas Classic Glass CG-DR-90 downrigger rod. Can't wait to try it.

I always hear "big net" is a must from experienced salmon anglers.
What consider big net?
Wouldn't be it too cumbersome on the kayak?
