I just picked up this unit for $59 on Amazon.

RAVPower 15000mAh Portable Power Bank Pack.

Mike
How does this help for a fish finder battery? It only has 5v USB outlets from what I can see.

It has a 9v or 12v output.

It doesn't say in their specs. Anyhow, that pack is 15000mah at 4.2v, which is the equivalent of ~5000mah at 12v :)

I know PolePole did some calling on a device like this, not sure if it was the same one or not, but found that the "actual" mA was about 1/2 of what it was stated based on the manufacturers feedback.  It has been well over a year or so since I remember reading something about this so I'm pulling this from some foggy part of the brain ... maybe he will chime in or provide more insight.

Mike ... go hit the water & give us a report back!

I've been using my $20 cabelas battery for approximately 3 years now.

As I said, for some people, those smaller batteries may work fine.  If you have a small gray scale fish finder and/or only fish a couple hours per trip you could easily get away with a $20 7aH or 9aH battery.  However, you wouldn't be able to use that same battery with my color GPS/fishfinder with down imaging for a 16hr day on the water like I do much less have it last you more than a year of regular weekend fishing trips before you had to replace the battery.

That's why I made the comment about finding the appropriate battery for YOUR specific electronic needs.

My reasoning is not just an opinion.  I didn't come up with this on a whim.  I've been installing, maintaining, and repairing marine electronics for a living for the past 13 years.  What I typed up is simply going by what I've learned during that time in the industry.  Is it the perfect solution for everyone?  Maybe not, but it is the truth.

On a nice sidenote, the consumption of todays marine electronics is So minimal compared to just a few years ago.  The difference of consumption between a Lowrance Elite 4, 5 & 7 for example is QUITE MINIMAL & they offer the ability to operate down in to the 10volt range before shutting down.

I do agree.  It's a matter of matching your battery with your desired needs.  I too run a ~$20 battery setup with my 7" color screen unit & it works for my needs since I commonly place my unit is "sleep" mode when I'm on my spot which drops the power consumption VASTLY yet keeps the unit ready to wake up with the push of a button.

I've been meaning to try and setup a dual SLA battery box with the batteries in parallel so I can have increased time, without having to swap.  Would be heavy, but hope it would last all weekend with my 4/DSI.

I use the 9ah Remco battery that came with my Hobie FF install kit. I usually try to charge it up before each trip, but I have forgotten a couple times and still got a full day of fishing out of it with my Lowrance Mark 4.

Really?  My testing showed ~500-600mA consumption with everything on that I could think of to turn on.  It's rated at 1A max so I felt good with the numbers I was receiving.  I was still less than 1A with my Elite 7 HDI
