Glad to hear that it wasn't false advertising. Now I think I will buy one.

Wow very impressive.

I got an entry level GoPro for Christmas and it think it is just labeled Hero no numbers like 3 or 4.  This works great for diving and is light weight but the battery is not removable.  I will get another one soon for kayak because I like shooting in higher resolution and this battery seems like a good addition.

I might go for it too... My only hesitation is that the Hero 4 version has a little flat wire that connects the (new) internal battery to the backpack-style battery. I want to be sure his doesn't put any extra stress on the battery hatch, and doesn't void the warrantee.

Another great question, AlexB.

Mine is on standby and I don't have a remote, so I've got to physically push the button once anything interesting happens. The camera is mounted in front and I have to get out of my seat to hit the switch, and it takes just a moment before you know whether it's on or not. I've lost fish while messing around trying to get the dang thing to turn on, so I'm planning to get a remote.

That's an interesting idea, Hojo. Any way to waterproof it? It gets wet out there...

Ignore that last question... I see they have one with an integrated "back door".

This could be a good option, but the fact that it's waterproof but "NOT SUBMERSIBLE" worries me...

For the Hero3, you have to build your own backdoor.

Are you planning to dive with the GoPro or just want to take underwater pics prior to netting the fish? You could probably build your own special backdoor with a waterproof one from GoPro.

However, the cable would be vulnerable to failure over time.

They've got a "splash and rain" proof version for the Hero 4:

I don't necessarily plan on diving with it (never dived before), but it wouldn't be unheard of for me to accidentally dunk it in the water.

After giving it some more thought, I went ahead and ordered a couple spare Wasabi Power batteries and a charger ($23.99 on Amazon). Next trip out I'll roll the camera full time and see if changing batteries is a nuisance.

If I went the battery eliminator route, I'd have to buy a USB power source and some sort of dry bag to store it in. I'd also have yet another electrical connection to (hopefully) keep corrosion-free.

I thought about changing batteries OTW, but I can just totally see myself opening that case and the gopro popping out because my hand slips and  :smt006  :smt010

So I decided against it haha.

I bet it has happened many times already. Good for business for GoPro.  :smt001

I picked up a hero 4 in late December. I was happy to see that my battery back pack plugs into the unit and functions. What really sucks is that the housing is different from the 3 and as far as I know they don't make a waterproof battery backdoor.
I usually dive with the power on and then reach up and hit the button to record when I see some action. For longer days I bring a battery and change it otw. Never had to do that with the battery back pack.

Seems like battery life would be much easier to manage while you're diving, because you know when you're going to dive down and you know when you're going to pull the trigger.

I'm sure you're right, but I see a whole lot more "battery died before I hooked up" and "lost the fish while fumbling with the camera" posts than "dropped the camera in the drink".
