Ha!  Didn't know your handle bro. Was hoping you'd come around.

Believe me, I'm all into it but can't take the wife n kids on my yak and they prob wouldn't join me on their own yaks. Maybe my son but not yet.

I like chilln on the boat too.

If I space out on the yak I may freakn tumble over and go for a swim haha

Good to run into you man.

Hope to see you on the water. If you're up to showing me the ropes somewhere let me know. I ordered a pfd and will need to get a radio at some point.

Cap Steve said he'd be willing to join us on his last yak he has too.

Welcome PDF, Radio and a whistle are all safety stuff you should have before going out too far in my opinion. Especially if you have a young family. Safety is everything. If you don't have a radio at least get a whistle and stay with in sound range of someone. Things can go bad fast. And don't carry all your gear on the yak all the time you for sure will lose some.

What's the dark side, hobie?

Yeah for now I'm sticking to the capitola kelp beds. Not far from water shore at all but anything can happen for sure.

That appears to be a 2-way ("walkie talkie") , not VHF.  Good for talking to you family on the beach but not for reaching anyone who will be of help to you.

You need a VHF.  Plan on spending ~$150 on a good radio.  Second to you lifejacket, this is one area where spending a little amount of cash is REALLY worth it.

Here's my PERSONAL opinion:

Cobra makes an 'ok' radio.  I generally classify the brand as a backup or spare unit due to quality & cost.  If you have the means ($$$) to do so, focus on a quality radio that will last you.  Brands to look at include ICOM & Standard Horizon.  I was in the marine industry (retail management) for 11 years ... those are the two brands with the lowest return rate & best customer support.  Again, you should be able to find one of those units for ~$150.

Last thing you want is a sub-par VHF in the event of an emergency.  Floating is a great feature!  GPS built-in is a good feature if you can swing the $$$ for it.
