I'm a little late for getting the more popular public campgrounds for a central coast trip with my wife and boys at the end of July. Anyone have an opinion on Gaviota State Park or suggestions for private campgrounds between Morro Bay and Gaviota that would be good for non-fishers, too?

Montana de Oro is nice. The Pismo/Grover area campgrounds are OK. They tend to appeal to the off-roading crowd (Pismo Dunes). El Capitan State Beach is very nice if you can get a spot.

Gaviota can be a good spot, but you'll need to watch out for the winds there. El Cap is nice, but i never had much luck fishing there, it is hit pretty hard all summer.

Jalama beach is more remote, but the wind and surf there and the exposed beach make it a gamble as a kayak launch.

I'd look at Montano De Oro. You can also hit Avila or Cayucos from MO if you drive a bit.

Awesome! Thanks for the replies. I've got a couple nights reserved at Montana de Oro. It looks like it's got a lot to offer the whole family, except showers. We can deal with that.

Montana de Oro State Park is nice, trails, beaches, bluffs with plenty of sea life. Also take a look at Morro Bay State Park, located on the bay in Morro Bay with the natural history museum and the embarcadero nearby.

Montana de Oro is one of our favorite places. lots to do for the whole family. It is not very dog friendly. Keep in mind if you are staying at Montana de Oro you can  use the showers at Morro Bay State Park which is about 10 to 15 minutes away. Pretty nice lunch at spooners Cove which is a short walk from the campground. there is a reef right outside the cove that some people fish but most paddle about 2 miles out to a larger reef. Great fishing there. If the launch their looks a bit dicey you can travel over to windmill just north of Cayucos.
