That thing looks like a multi tool, if you get stranded on a island you can cut fire wood, butter your toast and open a bottle of beer with it!

I have been on the water since 96. I never thought about a spare paddle. Now with the Hobie I have an extra way to paddle in if the drive fails. Just clipped to the side of the yak. Guess I was lucky.

I have a cheap thrift store 2 piece paddle I keep as extra. Just incase. You could probably get by with a small single paddle. Heck I have used a flip flop as a paddle when I lost one canoeing in Morrow Bay.
I only fish on days that end with Y

I keep an old fiberglass two-piece paddle in the hull during fishing season.
it just lives in there with the bilge pump and just in case.

I picked on one of the cheapo Amazon, collapsible ones < $15.  I'll just dummy-cord it inside the hull in case I (or someone else) needs it.

I've actually gone out to HMB and just used my Mirage drive because I forgot to bring my paddle.  It made for a very uneasy/paranoid day otw.  Thanks for all the suggestions!

I carry two of these.

The surface area looks kinda small on those things...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

I use a nice carbon fiber paddle that I won at the PIF a few years ago. I just strap it to the outside of my yak so it's in easy reach.

But before that I used a cheap paddle I bought off Mooch. Still have that thing...

had one of those cheap red aluminum handle kayak paddles ,came with a kayak deal, unscrews in the middle-stuck one half in each kayak with a piece of 25 lb test to tie it to the inside of the hatch cover so it does not slide out of reach during transport

never needed it but It is great to know it is inside the kayak..along with tons of pool noodles and a emergency pump..all stuff I may never need ad will be happy if they go unused

I never updated this thread, so here it is.  After having my primary paddle break during the rockfish opener this year, I upgraded my back-up paddle.  The guys that recommended having a full paddle were right.

I wasn't in my Hobie, and one side of my primary paddle snapped off. My emergency paddle was one of those single, collapsible jobs.  But, I used my broken paddle because I figured it was still better than that collapsible one.  Luckily, conditions were decent enough that I was able to make it back to the launch without too much trouble.  However, using a single paddle took way more time and energy than I expected for what should've been an easy 1.5 mile trip.  I learned that I definitely wouldn't want to do this in rough waters.

So, I got rid of that collapsible paddle and carry a 4-piece paddle as a back up now.  It's heavy but I can easily pull it out of the hulls of all my kayaks, and I'll have full control/propulsion when I need it.
