As much as I love the hunting and harvesting aspect of kayak diving and spearfishing, the amazing experiences that happen before, between and after shooting a fish are equally as memorable.

When you slow down a little you can appreciate the beauty of moments like launching through the waves on a remote beach, an inquisitive harbor seal, a lingcod or cabezon guarding an egg nest, a juvenile canary rockfish, a pipefish hiding in the kelp, a shared moment of laughter and fun with good friends while relaxing on the kayak, being buzzed underwater by a 1,000 pound SeaLion….

I feel very fortunate to be able to use my kayaks to get out and have such special experiences.

This little video shows some of my favorite “Non-spearing” moments of 2014.

The other side of the story for me is the hunt and the harvest.

Calming your heart and emotions while breathing up on the surface; gliding effortlessly down through the kelp stalks towards the rocks and pinnacles below; poking your head under boulders and into caves and cracks to see what kinds of monsters might be lurking; the excitement and anticipation when the beam of your flashlight reflects back off an eyeball or a toothy jaw in the darkness; steadying your hand while extending your arm and taking aim before you finally squeeze the trigger; that stoked feeling when you rise to the surface with your prize; paddling back into shore with your catch in your tankwell.

This video shows some of my favorite underwater harvesting moments of 2014:

Both sides of the story (the appreciation of the adventure and the beauty of the environment, and the hunt and harvest) complement each other and make the experience of kayak diving and spearfishing so special for me.

Thanks for looking!
