Catch of the day!

Hahaha!!!!! Took 3rd place with a 6"/4oz. Perch!!! :smt044
Last year I fly fished  and caught/released a bunch of small ones. When we got to the award ceremony, no one checked in a fly caught fish. So when I caught that Monsta (correct Boston spelling), I kept it, remembering last year. Sure enough, placed 3rd, beat out by a couple of perch not much bigger.
Mike(solsrf1) and I started at LaSelva and we're catching all small fish, although I hooked and lost a bigger one and Mike was broken off by something larger, so we decided to run up to the Pigeon Point area and found a good bite of walleye perch, but they were small too.
Great conditions even if the perch were tiny. Thanks for the awesome breakfast burritos Mike.
Good to see some NCKA brothers. Fun event and the proceeds go to the Monterey Bay salmon/trout project (Thanks Bushy).
Hope you don't need surgery Alex. I had double hernia surgery 3 years ago, and I was out of action for 4-5 weeks.  Good luck.

yes Goz won a trophy.  smart man remembering how few weigh in fly fish.  For that category, we will accept a digital dated picture with measuring device, like AOTY.  Because those fly guys are so "sensitive."

He was not the only ncka to win however.  Imagine my surprise as I found out the grand Master winner  (from Ventura) is also AN NCKA MEMBER!!!  Joe Voss whose ncka name I cannot remember right now, but we are going to kayak fish together up here in april.  Can't tell you how proud I was of this connection.  I already liked this guy a lot.  No wonder.  Unknown to me all day, but he is already ONE OF US!!!

Here's the essentials-

Over 300 participants for the 2015 Sand Crab Classic Perch Tournament, our biggest turnout in 11 years.  Getting bigger and better every year.  As usual, a
ll proceeds go to the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.

Anglers fished from Pacifica down to Carmel. Despite a recent slowdown for surfcasting perch, a number of impressive fish were weighed in.  Top honors this year went to Joe Voss who came all the way from Ventura for his first try at the Derby.  Joe arrived Friday and scouted locations Friday night.  He found a couple good holes at Salinas River State Beach to which he returned before sunrise Saturday.  Using bloodworms, Voss nailed a 15 1/2" Barred Surf Perch which proved to be the biggest for this year's Derby. Voss left Saturday night for his home down south.  He'll be back.

Other winners included Grace Volz, who captured the Grand Master Trophy last year, coming in #1 for Women's BSP with a fat 10 1/2-inch BSP, Caleb Arroyo winning Junior sea perch with a 135/8 Striped perch and Madison Jauregi capturing  the Junior BSP trophy with her 12 1/4 fish.
