Finally home from the Cove this evening!  Just took some time to read through all the reports here - great pics.

The event was awesome, and I have lots of people to thank and stories to tell.  Time for bed though!   :smt001

Thanks Eric and family for organizing such a wonderful event. Thanks to all of the volunteers also. Congrats to Terry for another well deserved victory in tough conditions. You could really feel the NCKA love and there was enough food at the potluck. Thanks to Crash for those killer oysters. I have been to all of the GS events except GS1 and this one was one was one of the best even though the devil fish was a no show.

Thursday: Drove up and stopped in Wilits to buy some beer and fried chicken at Safeway. For some reason, the Safeway fried chicken in Wilits is better than other Safeways and pretty cheap. Had dinner with Sean, Matt, Etienne, Ken, Isao, Amber and Sean and Matt wives. Ken and Etienne had pulled some dungies and we ate them and they were great. Laura made some red cabbage, potatoes and sausages which were great too.

Friday: Got to the launch at 5:30 AM. Peddled out with Etienne and Ken to fish the inshore to the north. The swell and surf was big when we launched but laid down mid morning. Fishing was slow so I headed up to the red can and worked my way across the reef to fish the pinnacles. My Plan A was to troll for salmon and pick up the lings on the troll. Ken and Etienne said the salmon bite was off so I decided to just target rockfish and not troll for salmon. Unfortunately, I only brought 4 rockfish lures, 2 green Scampis, 1 B2 squid, and 1 6” swimbait. Fished the pinnacles with Isao and Amber and finally found a couple of lings (24”, 26”) and a couple of blacks and called it a day since I had enough for dinner. Luckily I didn’t lose any lures. Headed in around 11:30 and the fan had just turned  on and it was getting  snotty. The rest of crew followed shortly. Had a burger and fries at the campground, so good and took a nap. Went to the safety talk and met Eelcram (Mark) my partner for Saturday. I told him that given the conditions we should head north and stay close to shore and target rockfish. Mark made a cool team shirt which was awesome. Picked up some oysters and ate half of them and was pretty full. Isao came by my room and I told him I wanted to watch the Warriors game would have to pass on dinner. I gave Ken my fish and gave the rest of the oysters to Isao. What an awesome game. That 60’ shot by Curry was amazing.

Saturday: Met Mark at the launch and launched around 7AM. It was blowing 5-10kt and super choppy. Mark and I headed up to abalone point and the fishing was sloooow. Pretty fast north to south drift and I used the peddles to slow the drift down. Lost both Scampis by 10AM. Mark called me and told me his rudder pin broke so we tried to repair it. Unfortunately I farmed the first pin. It’s actually kind of hard to get the pin in, in the swell and chop. Called Etienne and he came by with another rudder pin. Etienne got the rudder pin in I gave him my Shelton descender to hold the pin in place from the bottom. Unfortunately the descender impaled his finger. Youch. Back to fishing and by 11AM I lost the B2 squid and was down to the swimbait. The swimbait was made by Tsunami and was 6” in total length but only 1oz of weight so hard to keep on the bottom. I decided to long line it and hooked a 29” ling. Ended up with 2 blacks and the ling. I had a 3rd black but farmed it getting it on the clip. Mark ended up with a 19” black and I traded the ling for the black. Karen prefers blacks and blues and my goal was to bring home 3 of them.  Kind of disappointed I didn’t get Mark on a ling, but the other 2 times we fished together, we got skunked so we made some progress. I like fishing with Mark. He doesn’t talk much which is fine by me. That’s why Molly is my favorite fishing partner.  :smt005 Made some smoked salmon appetizers and headed to the potluck. Great catching up with James and Dave.  I will be moving to the Pacific Northwest in July and so this was probably my last GS.  It was nice to be able to say goodbye to so many old and new friends.  Life is good.

Another great event !  Thanks to all the people who jumped in to help Eric make it happen.
Questions answered: Can Ernest / Lucky13 cook?  Heck Yes!!!

Friday night's food was awesome!
Ernest keeps saying he didn't cook the food that was served. Thanks Ernest for "preparing" our food. I did my part by BBQ-ing the Filipino Longaniza I brought, preparing the oysters, heating the smoked ribs and corn from Scott.

It was great meeting everyone.

Thank you again to Eric and his crew for a wonderful event.

Thank you to Eric and his family on another epic event.  Also thanks to Big Jim, ATD Adam, Brandi, Dom and all of the other helpers.  A special congrats to Tracy and the other top finishers.

My game plan was to follow Eric's suggestion of trolling for salmon and catch rockfish and lings as a by catch.  I have learned a lot from Eric over the years from talking to him, reading his blogs and going on guided fishing trips with him.  I highly recommend Loleta Eric's guided fishing excursions.

My brother and I launched early in the morning in less than ideal conditions.  My brother headed to the red buoy to rockfish and I followed along behind trolling for salmon.  After five minutes of trolling my rod loads up and the fight is on with a 32" ling.

After trolling for 3 1/2 hours I was hungry and thirsty  so I decided to stop and take a 5 minute break to eat and drink.  I wanted to stay productive so I grabbed my rockfish pole and sent a diamond jig to the bottom.  Just as the jig hits the bottom my rod loads up with a 35" ling.

With 2 quality lings on board I commence to go back to trolling for the rest of the day.  My fish count for the day was 12 blacks and 4 lings trolling and 1 ling caught jigging.

On a side note it was nice beating my brother and getting some revenge for the butt kicking he gave me the week before.  My brother also suggested that I take the prize money and finally buy a fishfinder...maybe?

Once again thanks to Eric and his family.

Thanks Eric for GS9!!! And everyone else that helped or contributed. Had a blast hanging with friends old and new, caught a bunch of fish, ate like a king, and remembered why we respect the ocean on the way back in Friday afternoon.
Congratulatons to all the winners! Terry you da man!!

I drove wednesday night to get to Shelter cove for a good Thursday fishing. I am glad I did. Got to hook up with Bird and Otob. They taught me a lot about salmon trolling. Thank you Bird and Otob. Good knowledge build up to prep for when salmon are there.

Friday I went out with P-sherman and Fishing Addict. That was a day people found their limit on kayaking. A lot of story were shared already. My story is no different. I went out only to struggle to get back to shore. Then I was treated with lamb hot pot from Ernest. That was so good! :smt007 Got to know a lot of paddler friends too. Had good oysters too.

On tournament day I rigged my rod to troll for salmon. Then I realized water is so rough, I probably will need to head to shore soon. So screw the salmon. I needed to get some rockfish home. I hooked 3 lings and 4 blacks. Funny thing is, I let the big meaty black jumped out of my kayak, twice. Talking about stupid :smt010.

This is my 1st GS ever. With 2 lings turned in I was very happy.  Plus the event is well organized and a lot of fun. Thank you Eric for all of the hard work putting this tournament together.  And I am mostly impressed and happy to be part of are the NCKA comradeship.
Btw, I did shake hand with Eric and Jim (ouch)  :smt005 But water condition was too bad for me to even consider dive.

Already looking forward to the next GS.
