Re: family concerns:

I was one of the most pissed about the campground issue that came up a few years ago.  Its been extremely chill the last couple years and I'm bringing my 10 year old daughter to the campground this year.  I feel pretty strongly that the family element is well supported and here to stay.

Looking forward to a great family friendly event!

Here's a link to a Shelter Cove live feed camera - there are a few other views from around town on the site.

http://northcoastaviation.com/shelter_cove/shelter_cove_lost_coast_inn_headlands.htm

How do you like fog like that?  What's your plan if it's like that on tournament day?  What if it's like that the entire weekend?

What tools do you specifically rely on to be confident that you're safe in conditions like this?  Do you think that you are prepared to say that you're confident of your safety as well as other boaters relying on you for their safety?

Do you know Shelter Cove well enough to launch in very limited visibility and make it to and from fishing grounds safely?

I was with my daughter today as we viewed videos and helped to judge for a film festival.  I knew the ocean conditions were to start coming around at some point today or this evening after a very windy and rough week, so the Cove was on my mind.  When I got home and pulled up the web feed and saw pea soup fog conditions at the Cove it struck me that I really need all of the GS participants to understand that there is a commitment that each of us must make to preparation.  Either you prepare by confirming that you are ready with GPS, redundant compasses and radios, partners, and a strong knowledge of the layout of the Cove, especially in regard to the cardinal directions and landmarks there, or you prepare by gathering the tools and learning the knowledge BEFORE you get there.

Assess yourself.  What do you know about the buoys and dangerous reef areas just offshore at the Cove?  Picture yourself having to launch in pea soup and find your way to where you want to go, or, even worse, picture yourself encountering pea soup that sets in while you're out there.

You MUST have the tools to navigate in zero viz - no question about it.  You MUST have a basic understanding of the layout of the Cove and where you would need to go in order to safely return ashore.  You MUST have as much redundancy in your navigational, communications and other gear as you can - I carry 2 compasses, 1 GPS and 3 VHF's, plus other gear like extra paddle, water, flares, first aid kit...etc.

Here are some pieces to get you started on your study session for the Cove:

- what direction is it, precisely, from the launch to the Bell Buoy?
- what direction is it, precisely, from the Bell to the Whistle?
- what points of shore and shallow reef would factor in if you land in pea soup and need to get back to launch?

Every time I guide at the Cove I give all the info I can about all of this, and I'll talk about much of this at the group safety meeting Friday evening at 5PM at the launch, the evening before the tourney.

Before you get to the Cove, even if you've already been there, please study the maps and nautical charts - familiarize yourself with how North will feel like NE when you're around the launch and the nearshore.  Dedicate yourself to NOT being someone who doesn't belong offshore when pea soup hits, because we're not those people, and I am confident that we won't lull ourselves into a complacency with the usual good conditions that makes us become something like those people.

Thank you for taking this to heart and being the group of badasses that I know and love.   :smt001

Yesterday was really nice at the cove wind and weather wise. The surf was way way up. It was a great day to sit on the bluff and admire the power of the ocean.
