I will be visiting my family in Redding for Xmas and looking for recommendations for kayak fishing in late December. What are my best species options for either Shasta Lake, Sacramento River or Whiskeytown?

Best option for the sac is always rainbows. There will be some steelies available in late December.

Whiskeytown will be bass,  mostly spots. Pretty easy fishing in the winter here. Trout fishing here in the winter can be a real pain, and the quality is mediocre unless you luck out and hook into one of the few native browns that reside here.

Like Ben said,  Shasta spots is a good option. Trout can be dispersed that time of year and might not produce much. Of course, if you find shad,  it'll be a different story. However,  with the water so stained and low,  who knows?  The trout bite might be good through spring.

Hi Jammer, I would try Lewiston lake if you want trout. The sections  around and above Pine Cove Marina will definitly produce nice 'bows for ya! Everything works there, Flies, lures , bait you name it! Be Careful as the waters are very very cold! But the fishing should be easy :smt001 Oh Yeah its about 1/2 hr past Whiskytown.

Yeah, what they said  :smt003, post a hookup when you know the days you're going to fish.
