Thanks scwafish, I just figured that out from the local tackle shop. Doesn't seem to be stopping anybody though.  I counted about 15 pots out in the bay the other day and grew gravely concerned that I  missed the opener. It's seems like they punish us up here by delaying and keeping certain seasons closed when the rest of the state is enjoying a free-for-all. I'll be out there this weekend regardless

I think he meant that he'll just be fishing? Not crabbing?

I'll actually be working. Whale-watching tours out of sea-kayaks both mornings. Fishing the afternoons.

If the swell is big my back up plan is the Pacific Sun Seafood Market on Callan Blvd. in South San Francisco.   Usually $1.99 lb for live crab.  Can't beat that price.   :smt002

Any crabbing off of Muir?

There are definitely crabs at Muir...that's where I am launching if weather permits.

I asked earlier but no one replied.  Is there decent crabbing in the Monterey area?  The Del Monte Beach area looks promising.  Does anyone have experience crabbing in this area?

Ben, if this weekend is a go, I have a friend who is yak-less but wants to give it a try...  He is rather athletic and fit and adept at water things.   Would it be possible for you to port your Malibu 2 along with your Prowler, so he could go out with us?  Will pay you rental and for your trouble...  He is cool with an early AM launch and would be riding in car with me.

If not, it's cool - he could always rent out of HMB I guess...

Am I reading the regs right?  From a kayak we can take ten crabs, must be at least 5 3/4" and male and female are both OK? For San Mateo, Santa Cruz, etc.

Craig: sure, Ill grab it from our storage on friday, with a paddle, seat, holders and I can rig up a crate.
If we go on Sat,Anita will join me, but not on the water, so if there's anyones girl who wants to hang on the beach, hike, talk girl smack and ohh and ahh at our harvest she would love it. Doesnt really have to be a girl.  Maybe we can get a beach crew together.
Cook a few crabs on the beach. MBF, biggest crab? $5 each?

I'll be bring my little lady along and if there is 7 ft swell, I am certain that she will hang on the beach. I can only go crabbing saturday and early sunday morning as I have to meet up with my family for a trip to the aquarium on sunday. I wouldn't mind dropping my traps over night and really weight them down for a long soak.

Ben, thanks!!!!!  !  I will let him know that you are going to set him up so well.   I will see if his fiancee is interested in coming along.... I am guessing she would probably want to sleep in, but it's just my guess, so we'll see.

Mooch, I think Saturday looks slightly better weatherwise for now - we can see what the others think and schedules are.  But at this point, that's what I am guessing.

Still, with respect to BH, it looks like doing any sort of crabbing within 100 feet of the cove entrance would be somewhere between sketchy and dangerous, not to mention gear will move around a lot in the swell.  I would plan on paddling straight out, or north, to the closest sandy bottom at 70 feet deep.

J, yeah, I hear that Santa Cruz does produce crab, and that it becomes hit or miss just north of Monterey.
