:smt013 Well, I can't believe this happened to me, got a ticket for leaving my fishing license on the beach :smt010  Was out on the water when DFG came up on me and asked for my license. I reached for my wallet where I ALWAYS have it, and ... oh no it was not there, what a sick feeling I got in the pit of stomach. I knew I was screwed, there was not going to be any warning, you could tell these guys were not out to give warnings. I was sooo embarrassed, I know the law.  At least it was written as an "infraction" .  I called Sonoma County Superior court and they said I would get a courtesy notice in the mail and to follow the directions.  I think I will be dealing with this in traffic court.  From what I can tell it might be $400 if i cannot produce a license, which I CAN.  So then i think it will be reduced to $200.  One EXPENSIVE trip !!!! :smt013

Has anyone else had an experience with leaving your license off your person, experiences with Sonoma County Courts?

It's a BS ticket IMO.
I have no experience as yours but with technology the way it is today there should be no issue at all.
Cannot remember where I heard or read the story (maybe here) but someone was either hunting or fishing out of state and purchased a one day license.
Was stopped by DFG and was asked to produce the license.
It was buried in a pocket so the warden just asked for his drivers license #.
He tried to explain it was an out of state drivers license. It didn't matter.
He told the warden his out of state DL #. The warden punched it into his hand held device and said, "You're good". End of story.
He didn't have to produce it. It was clearly evident he purchased it and was not poaching by any means and was able to go about his day.
Isn't that the way it SHOULD work????
California is so effed up in so many ways.

Under the 2010 bail schedule it is $189 out the door with all fees, costs, etc. the actual fine is $25.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. It's 2014. The license immediately on your person law is stone aged and only serves as a revenue generating trap to harass the honest sportsman.

That really sucks. I got real lucky one time. I went out, fished all day, and as I came back to the beach and loaded up I realized I forgot to put my license in the kayak. Oh well, kicked myself for that but no big deal. Then I get to my truck where DFG approached me. Asked for my license, which was inside my truck. Talk about lucking out. Eep. We had a pleasant chat about the lings I caught though, and he was asking me for tips on where to fish for them.

Hope you can take care of it in court quickly.

When he was going to write the ticket he asked for my drivers license, at which time I replied that it too was in my wallet on shore, so he asked for name address and DOB, and called it into dispatch, and sure enought they came back with my ht, wt, DL number and everything else, so why they can't call into DFG and do the same thing, and see that I bought it back in feb 2014 is beyond me?!?!?

Back in the mid 90's I had a similar experience. Forgot my license,,, got ticketed.. Brought my license to court  that had been purchased prior to the violation. Was totally dismissed.
Hope you have the same luck.

I was out fishing with my son.  Asked by a warden for our licenses.  I had both of them on me, in my wallet.  He ticketed my son because he didn't have his license on him while fishing.  He almost ticketed me too because I was in possession of a license that wasn't mine.  That sure didn't help me make the point that LEO's are there to help out.

That's brutal, I encountered Warden before at Clear Lake, She asked for my license it was in my PFD on the campsite. Luckily she just ask me to have someone bring it. Called my wifey and brought it to me. Checked it and says dont do it again. Wishes me goodluck fishing. Nice LEO...I think she was hitting on me... :smt002

When I was stationed in Mississippi, I went out deer hunting with a bunch of buddies.  4 of us in a Chevy Blazer.  A warden stopped us and checked everything out.  He gave me a ticket for not having the right shade of hunter's orange.  My hunter's orange was a sweatshirt with University of Tennessee on the front.  I guess he wasn't a fan of Tenneesee?  Anyways, I went to the address on the ticket at the appointed date to pay my fine, expecting to be a court house or something.  Instead it was a private residence.  Sure I was at the wrong place, I knocked on the door to ask directions.  An old woman answered the door and told me I was in the right place.  Invited me in to the living room to wait my turn to see this judge. There were a few other guys sitting there too, watching Jeopardy.  Pretty soon, my name was called and I went into the dining room where I was told to take a seat.  At the table was the judge, finishing up dinner with some biscuits and jelly.  He read the charges to me, of which I could not understand a word he said with his Cajun accent other than the last sentence; How do you plead, guilty or not guilty.  I said Guilty your honor.  He told me the fine was $25.  I asked who I made the check out to.  He grabbed the name plate on the table, slammed it down 3 times and said rightcheer!!  I made the check out to the judge in his own name, got a receipt and was excused.
Whew!!  The deep South back in the 70's sure had some back woods justice!!

Hopefully you'll have good luck in court and it'll be dismissed. The tickets that bother me the most and seem the most chicken&^$%@# are the barbless hook checkers. You know, the wardens who run your carefully de-barbed hook through a cotton ball or cigarette butt looking for any stuck fibers. Has happened to more than a few folks I fly fish with, no matter how well crimped they made their hooks.

I hope sonoma county is a little more lenient. A friend of mine some years back like 10 years ago got ticketed in Mendocino county.for the same thing he has a fishing license but forgot it at home, he thougt he had it on him.Well short story long on court day he brought his license and showed it to the judge his fine ended up to be 600$ or so.hopefully sonoma is not as hardass.goodluck and your right dfg is not out to give warnings they are out to give out citations.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Welcome to California you should know by now it doesn't have anything to do with right or wrong its all about the money. I always wonder why ticket is $25 but after court cost and fees its 180 to 600? Just another way to jack money out of you.
