So, I've been crabbing a few times in Half Moon Bay.  I've found that there's a good amount of time to kill while I let my pots soak.  I'd like to fish while waiting, but I'm way too lazy to paddle all the way to the cans.  I was thinking that the area where I drop my pots is just sandy bottom, there should be sand dabs there.

Has anyone tried fishing for sand dabs in the shallow areas (~40 feet) in HMB?  Are there any there, or do you have to go to much deeper water (100+ feet) in order to catch sand dabs in the area?

Sorry if this is a repeat question.  I tried the search bar, but I didn't really find anything that answered my questions above.

There are sand dabs as well as sand sole and assorted bait species. You can drag a small or medium sized sabiki. The sand dabs are more abundant in water deeper than 50'

Thanks, guys. I'll bring my pole next time and see if I can get a couple. I figure it'll give me something to do to kill some time.

Pretty easy to find in 40-120' here in Monterey.  Just outside the harbor all the way to the red can in front of the aquarium.

catch them all the time!!

use a modified med-lrg sabiki; but put a 2oz sinker at the top (where the sabiki connects to the main line) and a 1oz sinker at the bottom. This will keep the rig on the ocean bottom and flush out those little bastards into striking!!!

ps: I make my own sanddab rig...... using #6 siwash hooks connected on 3-way swivels about 8" apart.... and tip them with a strip of squid....
