New 'Yaker from Rancho Murieta

Finally acquired a two person Malibu Kayak and found this site a week ago. Great site and I look forward to meeting up with with the local fish 'yakers soon. Will be a couple of weeks before I can get my yak in the water, as it needs quite a few doodads before it'll be fish worthy. Really, other than the two seats, there isn't anything else on it. No hatches, rod holders or bungees, just plain old deck. When ready. I plan on joining up with some folks and getting on some crabs and rocks. I'm available for mid week trips.

Welcome roostersgt, I am a newbie as well. We have had a tandem for about 6 months. Just about to make it fishing worthy this weekend. We are adding a few rails and fish finder. Great group of people here and you will love the addiction!

Be sure to become really comfortable as a paddler before getting too far along with the gear mods and cargo plans.  I carry a lot of stuff with me, but dealing with WX and being ready to swim are always at the top of my list.  Self rescue ability and not setting yourself up to get tangled in gear are huge factors.

Looking forward to seeing your yak setup and trip reports.

Rancho Seco Lake is just down the road from you.  Fun place for a kayak to play and fish!

Thanks for the warm welcomes and advice. I'm going to try going minimalist on the yak, only adding a few flush mount rod holders and a milk crate to start off. Agree I don't want to clutter it up and have potential entanglement issues later. Had an Aire inflatable kayak before and found it to be unbearably slow, but super stable, so never had to practice "self-rescue". I'll be doing some of that in our swim lake here as soon as my new "used" wetsuit arrives next week. Looking forward to meeting you folks soon. Hope to have the yak ready by the 6th and may hook up with the Sac Crew at the port. Pics to follow when I get the holders mounted etc....

Been super busy and have been waiting for special rigging parts to arrive so I could finish mounting the beach chair. Used PVC pipe to hold down the front of the chair and pop riveted a special doodad to the 'yak to secure the chair's rear. Two piece stripped trout rod is being used as a flag pole. It's almost ready for its maiden voyage. Picked up a used 3/2 wetsuit and handheld VHF. Still trying to figure out what type of foot wear to get for the  wetsuit and which PFD to get.

What do you think? Too ghetto with the chair? I'm pretty frugal and have been told I have questionable taste.

I like what you have done. Definitely test on the stability when you have time. I have a tandem Tarpon 130T that I plan on adding a middle seat. One thing for sure, we will have lots of room!  Great to see the mods you are doing!!!

If the beach chair doesn't work out for any reason try a bleacher stadium chair. It's bit  smaller but super comfortable. It's what I put on my yak.
