Thanks for the comments, guys. Very helpful.

I agree that anything over 1080 is probably overkill. I recently bought a new MacBook Pro (the 15" one that goes for around $1,900), but I'm not even sure that'll handle 4K video very well. I know my HD TV can't even handle it...

I'm not one of those people who has to have the latest and greatest technology, but I do want at least 12 megapixels for still photos. I want to be able to crop the shit out of pictures and have them still look good.

Alex, I usually film in 1080p at 24 fps. For the most part this is like the movie quality type of frame rate.
If you are going to add anything online like youtube and stuff, 1080p is more than enough. I have the remote and like it a lot, but you can also use the app and save yourself some cash too.

Or not...

REI has a promotion going right now. Buy any Hero4 and get a free accessory. Going for the Hero4 Silver edition ($399) with a free remote.

Watched a good review/comparison between the Hero3+ Black, Hero4 Silver, and Hero4 Black. Battery life was nearly identical between the Hero3+ Black and the Hero4 Silver, despite the 4 Silver's added touch screen. Battery life was considerably shorter for the Hero4 Black (even at the same video quality).

Here's that review/comparison if anyone's interested:

Does the LCD screen for the 3+ also provide additional battery power?

Well, I picked up a Hero 4 Silver from REI yesterday, along with a 64 GB card and remote (will be shipped to me direct).

Can't wait to play with thing on the water. I'm thinking I'll start off just using the head strap and/or fabricate a PFD mount like this one:

http://goprouser.freeforums.org/go-pro-pfd-mount-for-watersports-t2881.html

Then I'll look into rigging up with extendable poles, RAM mounts, etc, etc...

run a leash from the headstrap to your pfd so you don't hear a splash and have to quickly go diving. don't ask how I know that. yes I made a successful dive. :smt044

Oh yes... It won't leave my sight unless it's wearing a leash.

I went with the Hero3+ Silver.

Reason behind this and not going with the 4 is because of what we use our videos for there for sharing and most do not even have the ability to view the 1080 so I shoot at 720 when I had my Hero2 always shot at 720 and video quality to me was great. But depends on what else your gonna use it for and the money you want to spend.

Got these last night.

Very good point!  If your just going to upload to Youtube, the latest and greatest wont really look that great.

I'll be looking to buy someone's used GP3 after XMas  :smt003

Well, I already got my Hero4 Silver, and am happy with it so far. I really like the big screen on the back. It's making it much easier for me to get used to shooting fish eye style.

Now I just need to figure out some mounting/wearing options. I like the baseball cap mounts that some folks have come up with. I saw one that was mounted through the front logo area of the hat instead of the bill. Seems like mounting it on the bill would leverage the hat right off your head...

I like to use mine on an extendable pole.  That way you can shoot from many different angles plus get underwater shots.  Just be sure to put a pool noodle on the pole for floatation in case you catch it while casting.

I just bought these mounts

In addition, you probalby go with a head strap and gorilla pod, and you should be squared away.

I'm still fuming at how hot the GP4 gets.  You could seriously cook an egg on that thing, it CANNOT last that long with that kind of thermal dissipation issue
