Went out this sunday again, this time with my dad and brother and got our limit of lings despite the howling offshore wind! Biggest one this time was 30 inches :smt003
Give a man a fish and he'll eat a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit on the water all day with a stick in his hand and no fish.

nice pics...lot of lings around that area for sure...
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

People aren’t supposed to look back. I’m certainly not going to do it anymore.”

A bit south of Monterey is the Point Lobos Marine Reserve. It's been twenty odd years since I dove in that Reserve. If it's the same as it was, those are the largest Lings I've ever seen anywhere.

On one of the dives a friend Tim Owens decided to harass one particular bruiser who charged straight for Tim's face mask, knocking it off his face and making Tim a bit more humble than he was. I almost choked trying to laugh with a regulator in my mouth... I had to surface.

Everyone knows things look bigger underwater than above, that said, I'll guess there were more 40 pound lings there than anyplace I've had the pleasure to fish including Alaska. Of course, you cannot carry anything but a dive knife in the Marine Reserve, so the fish feel plenty protected.

Tim will tell you when they get to be over three foot long, with a mouth the size of your head, they are very intimidating and should be left to themselves.

I would love to see a 40lb Ling under water :smt007, that would be awesome!
Guess I need to learn how to dive first.
