I forgot to bring my paddle on a recent crabbing trip.  Fortunately, I ride a Hobie so the paddle isn't a real big deal.  I was going to rent one form the local kayak rental place until I was informed that it would be $25.00 a day or I could buy the badly used paddle for $75.  I opted to do neither and borrow half a paddle form my fishing partner.  I'm not trying to bash the rental shop but the price seemed awful high to me.  Again, this is not intended to be a bashing of the rental place but  I'm curious what you guys think would be a fair price.  I understand supply and demand and I had no other options but I also understand fair pricing.  ????   In the future, a spare paddle will become part of the essential gear I keep on my trailer.  My rental fee to NCKA folks will be $0.00.

I rented one once for 25 bucks.
Consider the business part of it. You aren't renting a kayak from them, and they can't use that paddle for a kayak they are renting.
25 is reasonable.

That does seem high to me. Cheap paddles sell for $40 brand new.

Good point.
On the other hand, I seriously doubt they have only one paddle per kayak.
I think 1/2 that would be a fair price.

Considering that a kayak rental (with paddle) is on the order of $25/hour, and you were renting for a full day (call it 6 hours), I would think $25 is fair, keeping in mind the relative cost of a kayak vs a paddle.  For $150, you would have rented kayak plus paddle for 6 hours.

I'm with tote 10.00 at the most. If cheap paddles sell for 70.00, they must cost about 30.00 to the dealer. At 10.00 for a rental 3 to 4 rents pays for the paddle. I bet the dealer was renting it for his cost. in case it walks away.

That math doesn't add up.  No one is making 57% margin on paddles.

$10 max, I had to rent a few paddles when I had a bunch of family coming up to the river. I had 5 kayaks and only 2 paddles, River's Edge rented me 4 paddles for $20 on a very busy weekend any livery should have extra paddles. I'm guessing they pay $60 for paddles and rent them how many times then sell for $25/30.

Your math is still different than my math.  Factor in rent, insurance, employees ...

FWIW, I once had to rent a paddle when I forgot mine.  I didn't feel ripped off.  I did feel like a dumbass for forgetting my paddle.   :smt011

The GF and I had matching paddles, so once on a solo trip to Stillwater North, I brought two halves of a paddle and when I went to put them together........... Well you get the idea,  I always carry duct tape, that and a piece of driftwood saved the day.

I woulda paid 25 but think 10 is more like it.

When you can get a wetsuit, float tube, boots, gloves, ab iron, gauge, mask, hood and snorkel for $35 for twenty-four hours, $25 for a paddle for a day seems exhorbitant. JMO.

I've paid $5 before, in an area that had a lot of rental options.
